I do feel that they have been leaning too much on the popular blockbuster lately, especially last year. They riffed the Dark Knight before they riffed Catwoman (and they still haven't). Well the past seven months have been about as diverse as possible. Things are pretty dependent on movie release dates. When there are newer movies, it makes sense to get riffs out for them while they are still new. Regarding your Dark Knight/Catwoman comments, just think to yourself how many people you know that own a copy of The Dark Knight vs how many people have a copy of Catwoman. The above comments about The Room show that it makes a huge difference in how many people are willing to experience a riff. Doing The Room was great fun, but it's kind of frustrating to put in all the time and effort on a riff that people are never going to watch. Wish it wasn't the case, but we've been doing this for three years and have a pretty good understanding of what people are going to do. Also, FYI, I watched Catwoman pretty early on in the RiffTrax timeline. Very stupid. But didn't get me as excited as The Room.

I had a gut feeling that was the reason why the Dark Knight was chosen. I have nothing against doing DK, because even though I love the film I felt that something that dead serious could make a great Trax. Though the bad word of mouth on it has prevented me from popping it in. Though mind you, I am a major Batman fan, and will definatly give it a gander someday.
I think you should riff on the Tim Burton films, though. I think those would be wild.
Like I said, I watched the sample clip of the Room and laughed my ass off. I'll do my part to support this Trax, but I do understand why it didn't sell. I need to make sure I can get a copy of the film before I purchase it. I'm going to check Hastings next time I'm in. If not, off to Amazon I go.

Availability isn't really the issue with The Room. It's available at amazon, the link is on the product page and it costs less than ten dollars. It doesn't get much easier or available. The total cost of The Room + the riff would be about as much as a regular new release DVD. I think that the lack of a Netflix rental hurts just as much as anything, but it does go to show that pretty much any extra effort than just pulling it off your shelf will deter a lot of people. I was speaking of availability in regards to rentals options. I couldn't find it at my usual haunt (a 99 cent for the week) rental at Hastings. And I branched out, no one offers it for rent in this city. Add in no Netflix, No Blockheads and The Room offers one option... buying it from Amazon. And I don't buy these movies. I either find them for rent, check it out at the library, borrow it, (have it on my shelf already ala Casablanca) or I don't do it at all I've had my eye on an $11 copy of an Audrey Hepburn film for 3 months now - even with the Trax as a draw, I'm not going to spend $$ on the Room ahead of Funny Face. ;D (BTW Torgo thanks for the R.D. suggestion, but Aunty did have it.

The Room is a special movie and everyone deserves a chance to suffer through enjoy it. Keep working on Tommy for a VOD option. Surely he can't be making any money with this fine flick.

I don't know; looking at Amazon's sales ranks, it's currently ranked #1 in Independently Distributed Drama, and #2 in Independently Distributed Comedy. Between Amazon sales and national midnight screenings, it's seems to be doing well, though probably not enough to cover its supposed $6 million (!!!) production/marketing budget (where the hell did that money go? The creepy billboard?).
Still, being able to sell it through Rifftrax would be amazing; more people need to check it out.

Maybe Rifftrax fans pushed it to number one?
BTW, comedy my a** There was no humor intended in that production.

Me too. This movie is surely the modern "Manos, the Hands of Fate." Nothing the guys have done so far has come as close to the perfect wedding of inadvertent hilarity and Riffing! I had to stop the movie and Trax several times to catch my breath from laughing so hard.

just finished watching it earlier tonight. that has to be one of the funniest rifftrax i've ever seen. i'd seen it already, minus the riffing (curse you, doc z!!) and it felt like it was about three hours long. same scenes over and over - lisa's mom: you should marry johnny! lisa: i don't love him. nauseating sex scene - mark: i don't get women, man. johnny: i'm so lucky to haaave lisssa who is sho seexii and you aus mah bes' fren! let's play some foooootball? horrifying sex scene - punctuated with that creepy-ass kid, denny, or danny or whoever.
but watching it with mike, kevin and bill made it fly by. it was hilarious. and thank GOD for disembaudio!

You know folks, I’m not that blown away by this. The movies stupefying odd, but the riffing? It’s not bad, I am laughing here and there, but from all the hype, I was expecting these brilliant bon mots and really, what most of this is, is simply mirroring what is said on screen. Lets talk like Johnny and repeat what the characters say and that's enough
It suddenly dawned on me that what I was feeling echoed a lot of what Mr. A said in his criticisms of Final Sacrifice. I can’t speak for Mr. A, but I recall that he didn’t find anything inherently funny about the guys saying “Rowsdower” in a funny Troy voice over and over. I feel the same about The Room.
Don’t get me wrong, its got laughs but I actually have tired of the sameness of it all, and turned it off. (and my God that disembauio stuff is idiotic!)

I just saw this the other night. Oh man that was great. At first I wasn't sure what to make of the disembaudio stuff as he's one of my least favorite things about Rifftrax, but it actually became a pretty funny running joke to distract us from the horrifying sex scenes. I especially liked the part where disembaudio's grandmother showed up for a tour of the place and was deeply offended by the sex scene.
I know they were trying to get us to think about anything but the sex scenes, but I would have liked it if they had at least made a comment about how Tommy was humping that girl's belly button the whole time.

in the un-riffed version (curse you, doc z!!) they have this horrible voice-over thing going on during the sex scenes - lisa and whoever she is having sex with will be kissing - lips locked - and yet you can hear male and female groans coming from...somewhere. clearly not from the couple on the screen. eww. maybe it was the camera crew - in pain. normally i do find disembaudio a little too distracting, but the little bits they did was pretty funny and MUCH appreciated.

ABC Nightly News just had a segment on the popularity of this "worst movie ever." Folks are still lining up at theaters to see it and give it a Rocky Horror Picture Show type treatment. Wonders never cease.

I think the Rifftrax page might have linked to it, but a few months ago Entertainment Weekly did a big, surprisingly thorough article about the movie and its cult, if anyone wants to know more: www.ew.com/ew/article/0,,20246031,00.html
