This will be my first attempt and I figured I'd start with one of my favorites as a warm up to see if I can get the hang of this.
Episode 301: Cave Dwellers
Synopsis: Cave Dwellers (aka The Blade Master) is the tale of Ator, an action hero that comes off as a low budget Connan the Barbarian. Ator and his trusty mute sidekick Thong are called into action by the daughter of The Great One (no not Jackie Gleason), who has discovered....something...a supposedly dangerous something called the Geometric Nucleus. Ator must rush to the rescue when the great one (aka Akronas) is taken hostage by a poor man's John Saxon in a silly black goose helmet. Along the way Ator faces invisible enemies, invents the hang glider, and sets off an atomic bomb.
Segments:
Opening: Joel and the Bots contemplate having new names in an amusing but not laugh out loud funny skit.
Invention Exchange: I love Joel and the Bots' Smoking jackets, very clever. The Mads' robotic arm wrestling, while not completely original, does make for an entertaining skit. I especially like Frank's attempts to sing "The Man in my little girl's life".
Segment One: Joel and the Bots reenactment of the lame opening credits itself is mildy funny, but add in the funny things they put in the fake credits and this is one funny skit.
Segment Two: Joel and the bots discuss why some movies give fancy pants names to low budget props. I love Crow's fancy name for paper clips.
Segment Three: Joel's Foley demonstration is another example of how this show can be both fun and educational. Great segment.
End: Oh man Joel's face at the beginning of this segment is priceless. Although the bots' sentiment that this was the worst movie the Mads had ever sent them is shattered the next season, this is still a pretty bad movie. I love the parts of the movie that they singled out for this segment. It really shows how little the director and editors cared in this movie.
My Favorite riffs:
"I'm the finest man in the middle ages...my my my!"
"He who reads these words of wit eats his tiny balls of....oh come on that's immature even for the dark ages!!"
"No Marmaduke, don't use the triple overhand stitch, bad dog!!"
"Tits all over for you Ator...we've been the breast...I mean best of friends."
In closing: What a great way to start off Season 3. You knew right away that this season was going to be one of the best. This is also a great episode to show to a first time viewer of MST3K. The riffing is spot on without too many obscure references that would go over a new viewer's head. The host segments are all good and entertaining. Also on a side note Miles O'Keefe, who played Ator in the movie, actually loved this episode.
