I probably wouldn't have even heard this news if I hadn't recently joined Twitter and started following a few people. Regardless of how I found out, though, it seems that Reading Rainbow is ending. There's an article about it here that's talking about all the wherefores. This show meant a lot to me when I was younger. I don't want to say that my life would've been radically different without it, but I'd be willing to bet that I'd be significantly different. Reading Rainbow wasn't like most PBS shows. I felt more like it respected my intelligence. It wasn't teaching me to be smarter, it was teaching me what I could do now that I *was* smart. In a few ways, it was a bit like Bill Nye, but for stories instead of science. ...maybe my love of those two shows is why I grew up wanting to be a writer who has a bizarre fascination with mad scientists. Regardless, I'm very sad to learn that this show is concluding. 26 years is an amazing run for any show, though, and Levar Burton and the rest of the people who made Reading Rainbow should be proud of the fine work that they did.

I'll be honest: I would have sworn that the show ended years ago. Nonetheless, I'm sad to hear that it's done for good. It was one of my favorite shows, too, for many years, and I always felt like Levar was one of the coolest people on TV (I mean, he was on Star Trek AND Reading Rainbow!!!)

I would occassionally stop and watch some Reading Rainbow even today. It was a huge part of my childhood. It's obvious that they still want to do the show and I'm a bit peeved they're ending it. It's surely one of the most quality childrens' shows ever made.

Definitely. If I had the cash I'd fund it myself.

One of the few important shows of my childhood is now getting canned. This is really bad news.

I think I've watched it once or twice, but this was within the last year! I'm 47!
But I did love the invention exchange, when Frank put on the Fram air filter and did his Georde Laforge impression.
