Since I brought it up, I'll update this latest event Andre Dirrell lost a split-decision to Carl Froch in the best fight of the night, while Jermain Taylor ended up floored by Arthur Abraham in the 12th in a fight Abraham was, in my opinion, winning fairly easily. The knockout of Taylor was somewhat of a surprise, coming with just a few seconds left in the fight. He ended up with a concussion, some short-term memory loss and a two-night stay in a Berlin hospital. It's speculated he may drop out of the tournament for health reasons (seeing as he's suffered a few serious knockout losses recently), but nothing has been set in stone. His next fight would be in the spring against Andre Ward, but there's talking about bringing in Allan Green or someone similar to take Taylor's spot. Otherwise, I thought Dirrell looked very good despite his loss. I think he has a better shot at Abraham - his next scheduled opponent - than Taylor did. Also in recent news, Kelly Pavlik has called off his Dec. 5 fight with Paul Williams due to an infected hand. Too bad, it was one of the more anticipated fights of the year. HBO said Williams will still fight someone, but they don't know who. And apparently the undercard fight featuring Joshua Clottey and Carlos Quintana has also been scrapped for some reason. What a mess.

I didn't catch any of these, though I wanted too, sounds like it's a bit disorganized though - Hope Taylor's okay, sound like he should bow out, you don't want this sport to kill ya.

This is different. The World Boxing Council wants to ban fathers from working their son's corner. sports.espn.go.com/sports/boxing/news/story?id=4621860Interesting idea, but I'm not sure what it will change. I'm not even sure just how much power WBC has to enforce this, they're obviously going to need the help of state commissions to make it work. I've always been wary of parents as coaches/trainers in any sport, anyway. In boxing it really could prove deadly. A few other notes: • Jermain Taylor is out of the hospital. That's good news. No word yet on if he will continue in the Super Six tournament. I don't blame him if he bows out. • There were a pair of really good fights on Showtime last weekend. Jonnhy Perez defeated Joseph Agbeko in a 12-round war for Agbeko's bantamweight belt (not even sure which alphabet title it was). Still, a fantastic action fight. The undercard was pretty good, too, with Antonio Demarco defeating Jose Alfaro. • Mike Tyson appeared on camera with Don King during the Showtime bouts. First he's on Oprah with Holyfield, now he and King are best friends. This is a strange world.

Quick note. Manny Pacquiao destroyed Miguel Cotto last night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Cotto was the bigger guy and a solid welterweight. I thought Cotto had a real solid chance to derail the Pacquiao train, but no such luck. After a fairly even first four or five rounds, Cotto was getting hit with both hands. Pacquiao, who was a little more hit and miss earlier in his career, has really proven himself lately. If Floyd Mayweather Jr. doesn't fight him next, he's one sad excuse for a champion. Impressive. www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-dwyre-pacquiao-cotto15-2009nov15,0,6181222.column

Yeah that's gotta be the next fight for Floyd. Pac was landing everything and if he does that against Mayweather it could be epic. One for the ages. Come on your two, lets do this thing.

Update on the Super Six tournament. Andre Ward defeated Mikkel Kessler in Oakland, Calif. last night for the WBA super middleweight title and to become the only American to register a first-round victory in the boxing event. The referee stopped the fight in the 11th on cuts (one over each of Kessler's eyes were caused by head butts), but the scorecards had it right in giving Ward the unanimous decision. www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_13844706I think most people were surprised how well Ward performed (I know I was). Kessler was a tournament favorite for many. Kessler looked flat-footed and Ward looked sharp. Good, surprising fight.

I caught that one and Ward looked sharp. If he disciplines himself (stop lunging. It makes you off balance, takes an edge off your punches, can leave you open to punches... AND INCREASES YOU'RE CHANCES FOR HEADBUTS). Otherwise I was impressed.

Kessler was pointing fingers in the post-fight interview, which I guess I could understand, but I really don't think those cuts were caused by intentional butts or that they had that big an impact on the course of the fight. Ward was still the clear winner. He should definitely work on it, though. There really is no upside - you can injure yourself and can only cultivate a reputation as a dirty fighter.

Heard this new this morn. Looks like Mayweather Jr. and Pacquiao might be a go in March or May. Floyd has agreed to the fight and now it's in Pacs hands. Latimes.com

Good to see the talks progressing quickly, but I have to admit I'm a little surprised. Manny can be a bit finicky with his contracts. I also agree with Roach, March seems like a pretty quick turnaround for this fight. Probably wouldn't affect too much, but it might be worth putting off a few months. Also, Roy Jones, Jr. lost by TKO in the first round to Danny Green in Australia the other night. What a pathetic performance, to put it mildly. Jones looked absolutely terrible, and in all honestly, I would have considered withholding his paycheck if I had been the promoter. He went down on a lousy punch about halfway through the first round, got up, and took about a minute of unanswered punches by covering up. Ref did a good job stopping the fight. But Bernard Hopkins - the 44-year-old wonder - looked great against Enrique Ornelas, who was game but over-matched against. Hopkins is a machine, can't believe he still looks as good as he does. These two fights were supposed to set up a Jones-Hopkins showdown, but Jones' poor performance threw that out the window. Hopkins looked mighty ticked during his post-fight interview on VS. He even tried to pawn it off as a bad stoppage by the referee (it wasn't - Jones messed up, Bernard, not the ref). sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2009/writers/chris_mannix/12/03/hopkins/A few other things. • Comments made by Hopkins after his fight seem to indicate he thinks Australia is part of Europe. • He also made a comment that he would become the heavyweight champion of the world in 2010. This seemed like more crazy talk until I realized David Haye had a belt. Hopkins could beat him.

latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2009/12/mayweather-promoter-im-not-saying-the-fight-is-off.htmlLooks like Mayweather is trying to force Manny into blood testing by the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. Whether Mayweather is paranoid or just trying to be difficult is hard to tell, but as far as I'm concerned, Manny shouldn't do anything that isn't mandated by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for every other boxer. If Mayweather wants to change those standards, go to the commission. Don't start bringing out stuff like this while you're negotiating for a fight. Stupid. Also, some good fights occurred during the month of December. Kelly Pavlik made a return to the ring and looked decent, but not great last weekend.

Well, the fight's off. It's a messed up thing, but it's true. Manny will fight Joshua Clottey on March 13 at the Dallas Cowboy's new stadium. www.latimes.com/sports/la-sp-pacquiao11-2010jan11,0,4627653.story There are two sides to this argument, obviously, but I still feel Mayweather is in the wrong here. Why, when there has never been any kind of proof about Pacquaio using steriods, should Manny have to follow these new rules stipulated by Mayweawther? Manny agreed to whatever testing the Nevada State Athletic Commission requires. Mayweather wanted more. I say bunk. Pacquiao shouldn't have to submit to tests that other fighters don't have to submit to, regardless if Mayweather submits himself to the same testing. This is unprecedented and unnecessary. The boxing fans definitely lose on this one. Clottey is a decent enough fighter, but this is a first-round playoff game instead of a Super Bowl.

It went all the way, but from the highlights I saw, Pacquiao was dominant. So, does Mayweather stop the nonsense and get down to business. Those 2 need to square off, soon.

Manny danced - and threw - all around him. Clottey never really pulled the trigger, though when he did he landed and made an impression. He fell victim to the spell the fighters who never took a chance against Roy Jones Jr. fell to. He held back way too much.
Incidentally, the whole card was garbage. Not a good fight in the bunch. Mayweather-Mosley is a better bet at a good fight, and I really don't feel like throwing Floyd money after he derailed the fight that should be happening.
You called it right - those two need to get down to business and make it happen. Tonight's fight was a waste of boxing fans' time.

Well they showed the Mayweather/Mosley fight at the local Regal, so I went. First 2 rounds we had a fight, nice to see Floyd rocked. But then it was all Mayweather, Shane had nothing and at about round 5 he was a mouth breather. He looked tired and beaten, they could have just stopped the match right then and their.
Doesn't look like May is gonna back down on the blood test, he says he just wants what fair... which is Bullshirt. He's pressing something beyond the normal rules.
At this point there's one fight, and only one fight - and if Mayweather is gonna be a dickweed about this then theirs no reason to watch another of his fights.
He said with Shane, he was giving the fans what they wanted. Right - you really care about what the fans want then you know what you have to do.
On the undercard, that red haired kid looks promising. He's built like a bull, all upper body bulk.
