just saw alien factor last night, the first CT i've seen since oozing skull, which i didn't like that much.
i kinda got a soft spot for alien factor just because i'm a baltimore local (well, semi-, i live in DC), so it's fun to see the place on the silver screen. oddly, i'd just seen it unmistied (there's a pretty fun DVD on netflix complete with a commentary from george stover, one of the lesser actors in "alien factor," if you buy the idea that the movie contains greater actors.) anyway, the movie itself is obviously terrible, what with the amateur actors etc., but for the time and budget the special effects are actually pretty decent, and the guy who did the title sequence wound up being a big title guy, did the titles for T2 and the Abyss. so it's not all bad. but it's mostly bad.
anyway, the show itself was hilarious, and though maybe it's a no-no to compare, i think it comes off very favorably compared to rifftrax. there just seem like there are a lot more jokes, and they're a lot more funny. i think plainly it's that CT has more writers. plus they have trace beaulieu, who i continue to think is the best all-around talent from the old MST3k crowd. i wish trace would be a guest-riffer on rifftrax, i dunno if the politics makes that unthinkable.
also, i learned how to pronounce his last name, finally.

I watched my first Cinematic Titanic episode yesterday. I was a little unsure of what to expect. Would they still have the old magic? I know they're all still funny, but y'know, sometimes its just different. It was the Doomsday Machine, and boy, it was such a treat. They did have the same old magic, I didn't feel that the movie dragged or anything. It held its own against MST3K. I really, really enjoyed it. I look forward to the other 4 episodes I got.
Also, that movie was just perfect cannon fodder for these guys. Bizarre, cheap, stupid, yet still easy enough to look at and follow along. I agree with the idea of this being sort of a cousin to Monster a-go go. There was no other space ship. I also liked the comments about how big the space ship is, and just how tall each of the rooms are. I think it was Mary Jo who compared it to flying in space in a high school gym.

In prep for Fridays show I watched The Oozing Skull.
I hadn't seen this one for a while and it holds up well after all this time.
It was a little weird not having a beginning like the next few releases were they started to incorporate their backstory but I go over that soon enough.
The riffs regarding Doro were enjoyable and my favorite part was the "These Boots are made for Walking" dances and music provided by all.

Doomsday Machine, which was just the kind of sci-fi schlock that I could sit through anyway, and with the Titans talking over it... it became utterly fantastic. Many fantastic riffs in there, particularly the stuff about the variety of space ships.

After receiving my first ever order of CT, I watched Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks. It was from their Scratch & Dent sale, so I didn't know if the quality would be affected. It wasn't, so I feel I got a good bargain. There was a tiny bit of color missing on the edge of the DVD, which was the only flaw I could spot. The show itself was good, although I have to get used to the 5 of them around the edge of the screen. Yesterday I saw The Alien Factor, which was live. I liked this one a lot. The jokes were great and the movie was so funny. Also the acting was pretty bad, which added to the enjoyment. The audience added to the fun. I'm off to see my final purchase, Danger on Tiki Island. This one is also live, and if it's 1/2 as good as Alien Factor, I'll be happy. I can see where my budget is going for the next few months. I used to buy any Rifftrax I could afford, and any new releases of MST. At least CT don't have too many for sale. I might have to start working for a living.

Finally got the first wave of Live DVDs, and with all the hype around them...that was it? People really think these are superior to the studio discs? Sure whatever. The format has its virtues, but having watched one of RiffTrax's Live DVDs before this purchase, these are very underwhelming. RT made it an entire experience when they went live, but the Titans are just in and out. Not really all that enjoyable a live experience.
It's not enough to turn me off CT, as I've loved their run so far, but the Live format kind of sucks and adds very little except a vibe as if Tom Bosley opened each episode with "Cinematic Titanic was filmed in front of a live studio audience!" If that's all I'm getting, them color me disappointed.
East Meets Watts was the best of the three. Kung fu cinema lends itself to the riffing format so well that I'm surprised that it took any of these projects so long to take one on. And this one's a doozy of a lamewad. Riffing is on fire making one wish for more kung fu action in the future.
The Alien Factor was the one I was the most hyped for, and it's pretty good, but not up to the standards of the previous disc. Movie is obsessed with exposition, surprisingly moreso than any random Harry Potter adventure. Less talk, more aliens! Riffing has highs and lows, more of the former than the latter, though.
Danger on Tiki Island rounded it up. That was an...interesting movie. But this is the first ime I can honestly say the Titans bombed. The riffing improves the more wild the film gets, but ultimately I was bored with the majority of it. Even the audience only seemed to be into it off and on.
1. Doomsday Machine 2. Legacy of Death 3. Frankenstein's Castle of Freaks 4. East Meets Watts 5. The Oozing Skull 6. The Alien Factor 7. Santa Claus Conquers the Martians 8. The Wasp Woman 9. Blood of the Vampires 10. Danger on Tiki Island

With great deductive reasoning I was able to surmise that.

Danger on Tiki Island This CT talk put the bug in my ear, thought I'd give this another go. Plus. after the last couple of RT releases I wasn't really getting a lot of laughs and was thinking, "Maybe I'm just sick of riffing?" But no, while there are some weak jokes and a few sloppy bits of delivery, this was a hoot. I got more big belly laughs from the first 15 minutes of this thing, than I did the whole of Thor or Laser Mission (not sure how it would meassure up to a RT classic like Twilight though. I should watch that next)
I also enjoyed watching the gang on the sides of the sceen from time to time. I cracked up seeing Josh make chewing motions after delivering a riff about Esteban (or is that E-stabbin?) having the taste of dead woman in his mouth. Frank was fun just because he was having so much fun.
Oh, and the invisible horse bits killed me.

Over the past few days - East meets Watts and Blood of the Vampire - East is pretty much what it's always been. It ebbs and flows. Still offers plenty of laughs.
Blood? It was strange not hearing the audience, and I missed them (it was kind of quiet... too quiet, after a jokes). Still, once I got used to it again I enjoyed many a hearty laugh. And the final sequence is still one of the funniest (and sacrilegious) things I've ever heard from any riff project.

Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Very familiar with the MST version but this one is really growing on me. Fantastic riffing, very funny stuff. I only watch it around this time of year, it's still pretty fresh for me. A great holiday treat.

War of The Insects
It couldn't possibly live up to seeing it live with Raja in DC. That said, its pretty damn good. Riffing started off a bit slow but picked up steam and remained steadily funny throughout. I noted some new riffs plus recalled some that had left me breathless at the live show.
The movie is an absolute hoot. Poorly dubbed and totally incoherent Japanese nonsense that would make Sandy Frank proud. Filled with B actors who create quite the buzz, its a movie with bite. Unfortunately it bombed. But at least I have my memories preserved forever of George, Carl, the barkeep, and rest of the wacky bunch. Now I can relive them in flashbacks.
