A couple weeks I started playing Chris Kenner's "I like it like that" on the guitar. He wrote this in 1961, and the lyric goes, "all I could say was...YOWWWW," which you are supposed to let go and scream. It got me wondering, when was the first scream in a pop song, not a "ooo" but an uninhibited scream. I may well come from R&B first...
Does anyone here know the first popular song that had a scream like that in it?

Something by Little Richard? He did the "Wooo!" thing a lot.

But his "wooo' was more a musical thing than an uninhibited scream. I mean it was wild and raw but also musically correct and in pitch. I'd say it started in the blues. But there's got to be a '50s rock precedent.

There's a Wiki on screamsand the NY Times had an article on the subject. Though I don't like those non stop screaming vocals, I do enjoy a good, out of the blue, scream. Especially from the Muffs Kim Shattuck - who lets out a roar on a song for no reason other than it sounds cool. A few months back I lost my voice for a good week, couldn't get it back and could barely talk after screaming a word on a recording for a song I wrote. The problem was I kept doing it over and over again because I had a specific kind of scream (I'd say, "no, there is not enough desperation in that one", or it "wasn't primal enough") - I was a little scared that I did permanent damage because I couldn't resume recording for nearly a month. Next time I'll hire a professional screamer (like my ex wife - Ba-Doom-Doom! drum roll please)

hey, thanks. I thought Little Richard was a good guess, actually. Lol about your ex-wife, Tonyetc.
BTW, Chris Kenner also cowrote Land of 1000 Dances, another terrific rock classic.

I don't know about the first, however, IMO the best scream goes to Roger Daltrey on " Won't Get Fooled Again"
