I watched it on Saturday - I liked it but it wasn't great. The film was a trip, but it didn't really bother me like it did MJ - I think because everything was so hokey that I just couldn't see it as disturbing on a fundamental level. I mean, I've seen more subtly-portrayed mad scientists on The Three Stooges, for crying out loud. For me there's something tonally about it. The same happens with Strange Creatures, it isn't the worst or the most disturbing film they've ever done, but there is some undefinable -oh- vibe, I guess. Certain movies have a tone to them that makes me feel icky. Call it an example of "deep hurting" Edit - Hey, and this might be the key to the review I'm struggling to write. I might actually get to add it to the site tonight. (and the crowd goes wild.... yay) Edit of the edit - and the review is in Maniac

Have to agree MJ. Some very good riffing in places but the movie is just horrendous. It actually got to me, which doesn't happen very often!

Huh, I was expecting to be creeped out after reading the Rifftrax synopsis of the trax, but to me it was way too over-the-top goofy to bother me.
The trax itself isn't one of my favorites, but maybe it'll improve with later viewings.

I actually enjoyed this trax quite a bit. I had seen some clips of the movie before, so i knew what i was getting into. Hope they keep these public domain turkeys coming.... and for 7 dollars, it's a bargain.

Not a bad installment. Agree with MJ that the movie was almost like a 1930's-style "Manos", tonally. I didn't think the riffing held up in the second half, but there was some killer stuff in the first half. The sheer weirdness of the movie ultimately overwhelmed anything the riffers could come up with. "I think too much of Satan" to experiment on cats? What does that even mean?!?

oh man, i was cracking up from start to finish. at either the riffing or just the out-and-out bizarreness of the movie. it felt like it should have come before the 1930's - when i think of the quality of film that was being produced at that time, it seems impossible that this was created. i hope those cats got a few good shots in to whoever was in charge of abusing them. yikes.

I'll have to wait for this one to hit DVD.
I only watch the Rifftrax that are released on DVD. Does that make me lame?

We offer a burnable option - you can buy Maniac and download the files, then piece them together and burn to a DVD. The process is only a couple steps and requires minimal technical ability.

I liked it, although it might not be a repeat viewer.
I didn't think it was overly creepy--I think too old and cheezy and B&W to be too creepy.
I didn't like the cat scene though. I looked it up, and IMDB has this: "In the scene where a cat's head is squeezed and its eyeball pops out, the cat actually only had one eye; a glass eye was inserted into the empty socket before filming, and that was what popped out."
Overall, I love the knew regular release of premixed old movies. Now, there's only one thing to make it perfect. I'd love to see some sort of skit thrown in there, maybe halfway through. Perhaps some sort of parody of the movie. Or maybe a quick look "backstage," similar to what they did with the Lunch Breaks in The Film Crew.
Keep em comin!

I believe the same people made Reefer Madness. Seeing this movie was pretty disturbing. I missed a lot of Riffs just because I was fascinated with what was going on. I don't know if the fault was the story or the editing, but about 20 minutes in I gave up on trying to follow any logic in the plot and just went with it. We have zombies, sexual obsession, long narrative text blocks about random psychological illnesses, an unhealthy obsession with cats, murder, women hanging out in your grandmother's underwear, ripoff funding attempts, bad toupees, a basement that expands and shrinks, bits of an Edgar Allen Poe short story and a lot of random stuff that never fits in anywhere. I think the people who made this movie shot up heroin a lot and were in denial about it. I think they sought to assuage their poisoned souls by this expose of the twisted world they lived in.

We always say that there are "no immediate plans" because we'd rather you got the download; but I think it's fair to say that all of our Public Domain features (and shorts) will make it to some form of retail DVD or another, the main factor being the time it takes to produce them.

I appreciate the honesty. I'll probably wait for a commercial DVD. However, I think I'll try some of the download only tracks, which I haven't done yet.

Very possibly. But, I think this is just the SAW of its time. They couldn't show too much graphically so they amped it up with script/acting insanity.
