I liked both previous Stargate series and haven't missed an episode of this new series, but for me SG:U's somber atmosphere, lack of humor but especially, the large number of unlikable characters (plus all the whining and arguing so many of them indulge in) kinda makes this hard to watch.
Anyone else have any thoughts on this show?

Bummer. This is the second online forum where I've asked this question, and pretty much like the other one, have received the same amount of interest i.e. basically zero. I don't have thin skin and am not into politcal-correctness, so if you think this show sucks, go ahead and say so.

I've only seen the original movie, a handful of SG-1, and the Ark of Truth, and nothing else. I like Stargate, but not enough to tune in weekly or follow any of the spinoffs.
Of course, I'm pretty sure a lot of us haven't tuned into SyFy for quite a while, so that may result in a general lack of interest for this series.

Not tuned in??! You're missing all those classic movies, big budget and much beloved B variety in color AND black & white; the TV series we grew up with and loved; interviews with countless actors and directors of said filmed entertaiment; and even some original programming which while budget contraints prevented the inclusion of SOTA special effects, more importantly some of the best writing talent was employed and because of their respect for the network and its loyal fans, some writers even worked on a volunteer basis. Sorry that was a daydream about an actual sci-fi channel I have every once in awhile. Seriously though, I know what you're saying and the fact that Comcast will most probably get approval for a controlling interest in NBC cannot be good news for this already mostly-crappy pseudo-science-fiction channel. On a positive note: here's a trailer for a movie SyFy would never show since I'm sure their focus groups that that they must use would never approve ("Eww, it was made before 1990!" "This movie is making me think - turn it off!!" "Where's the big breasted women?"). Quatermass and the Pit (I think the entire movie is posted elsewhere on Youtube). In the U.S. its title was Five Million Years To Earth. This show, one of Hammer's better efforts, truly scared me when I was 11 years old when I first saw it and it still creeps me out now. The trailer doesn't really tell the viewer how subtly spooky this film really is (its religious overtones contribute to this), and is much more a thinker-type story rather than the action movie that the trailer portrays it to be.

To answer to the OP, I have not been watching SG-U, though I have a friend who was looking forward to it. I should ask him if he's been keeping up.
I'm like Torgo, I saw the movie in the theater (not a bad flick, really) and caught just little bits and pieces of SG-1. I wish I had started watching SG-1 when it was on Showtime. I'd like to see them or HBO do more science fiction stuff like that and less surreal stuff like Carnivale, John From Cincinnati and so forth. I may have to revisit the DVDs.

Well, based on the lack of response I've seen here and on other sites I'm getting the feeling I'm in a minority but I'm quite enjoying Stargate Universe. I've seen every episode. It started a little slow but it's been getting better as it goes. I think many fans are not happy with the new more serious direction this show is taking compared to the other SG series. It also has a much more serialized feel than the other series. I enjoyed the first two series, but my one issue with Atlantis was that it was a little TOO much like the original. It never really felt like it had it's own identity. This new series is going for more realistic characters and situations. I'll admit I wasn't crazy about most of the characters after the first few episodes. As time went on however, I think they're really fleshing some of them out and they are becoming more interesting. I'm hoping that the popularity of the Stargate franchise will keep this alive long enough for people intially disillusioned to give it another shot.

I've seen a few episodes of it and I think it's trying to hard to be Battlestar Galactica instead of the Stargate that it's suppose to be. I really liked Atlantis, this...eh...not so much.
