I agree with beljah about the positives and the negatives. I'm not as distracted by the visuals as much as the audio. More specifically the audience. It is absolutely obnoxious... and 90 minutes of that is just too much for me to sit through. I've been to their live show, and the laughter is infectious... but that, in itself, is an experience and not one that can be relived via a DVD. Its like going to a rock concert. I mean, you are rocking out, banging your head, possibly drunk, and covered in sweat next to other sweaty people! Its an experience... but I don't want to be drunk and sweaty next to someone moshing next to me while I listen to my CD on my home stereo. And those with false hopes, I can assure you there will not be an audio option to filter out the audience laughter, because that is their whole point by making a LIVE DVD. They are trying to capture that live experience--and maybe they did--but, that is not how I want to enjoy CT at home. It doesn't matter if the audience is real and not a laugh track... but wow! I mean, my God, that would be pretty damn sad if they did have to add a laugh track...
So, for me... I just can't get over the audience... which sucks, because after watching the YouTube preview, East Meets Watts looks like it would have been one of the best installments in the series. I was totally blown away by the riffs... I can only hope to God that this is just a one (or two) time thing and that it is not the future of Cinematic Titanic DVDs... but with all the future LIVE shows planned, I am pretty sure we are looking at the new Cinematic Titanic, and it is--in my opinion--a bleak future.
Dear God, I hope they go back to the studio DVDs...

I'm going to get it then see if I like it or not. I enjoy watching Stand Up on Comedy Central and the audience laughter doesn't bother me at all. I'm hoping the same is true for this particular effort.

I haven't watched the trailer but I will give the DVD a shot. I think that as long as audence noise is kept to a minimum I'll be OK with it.

Sky, it's in the background. It's actually louder when you see them live, but you hear everything because of the audio set up and volume. And it sounds like they mixed this very well.
You also get to see their faces, which you do when you see them live, as opposed to their studio releases.

I thought the clip was really funny. The audience didn't really bother me but it would be nice to have an alternate track without it. It seems like that would be a compromise for people who don't like hearing the audience but still allows CT to make DVD's cheaper.

The audience is going to be way to distracting for me. Listening to the sound for the trailer it doesn't really sound like they have separate audio feeds being mixed. It sounds like one or two house mics picking everything up from the P.A. You can hear the echo from the room. That is not what a board recording sounds like.

I agree with mrtorso (not on the distracting thing - I agree with Dr. Z on that front as audience laughter doesn't bother me either, but with the audio) Even if their were separate audio feeds wouldn't there be some ghosting on your actors mics. I believe you'd still pick up something from the audience?
With this modern tech, maybe not. I know in the studio I was able to do voice and guitar at the same time, different mics... and then later wanted to re-record the guitar and there didn't seem to be much of a problem with my voice mic picking up a lot from the first guitar track.
So it's possible, but with the echoing I'm thinking an option to turn it off isn't likely.

The audience is just too distracting. Hopefully, they'll get back to studio DVDs. I'd really hate it if this was the future of CT, because I can't see myself supporting it.

I thought the clip was really funny. I wouldn't dispute that in the least. And it seems Frank does a great job playing to an audience.

Has there been any leaks of the Rifftrax Live Plan 9 DVD? Or have they released other live DVD's? Do they handle the "laugh track" differently than CT apparently has? You can watch a sample here: www.rifftrax.com/dvds/rifftrax-live-plan-9-from-outer-spaceAt first I thought there were no audible audience laughs at all, but then I noticed they started to bleed through on the bigger laugh lines. Doesn't seem quite as obnoxious as the CT version, but it sounds like audience laughter is definitely there. I'll probably get both of these, since I saw both live shows when they were in town (does anyone know if the CT show was the one they did at the Largo in LA? Joel flubbed the same line about "this works on guys, too" at Largo....unless this is a scripted "flub"). Still, I think while it's safe to say the RT live DVD will be a "special" release, I really hope that CT goes back to studio DVDs after this one. I agree with Sirhamhat that live shows are only awesome when you are actually IN THE AUDIENCE during the show. You absolutely cannot replicate the same experience at home on your sofa. For instance, I saw Tom Waits perform live at the Wiltern in 1999, and it was honestly the greatest concert experience I've ever had in my entire life. Absolutely electric! I hunted down a bootleg of the concert (shhh!) to try and re-live that life-changing event....but it wasn't the same. Waits even put out a slickly-produced live concert CD last month which I got all excited about....but same thing. It was okay, but in the end I'd rather go back and listen to the studio versions of the same songs. The same holds true for CT/RT releases.

I wish they put up a bit more of the riffing portion to see how much audience gets through. It is still way more muted than the CT live show because the audio is coming off a soundboard for each of the riffers and not from house mics.

I just watched, and you know what? Waaaay stronger than any studio release. The audio guys did a great job, the audience wasn't intruding at all (except the claps, god I hate people that clap at jokes, but that's just me). Not to be a bastard or anything, but I would be really thrilled if all the releases were live shows from now on. Hope they include the opening acts next time.

While we don't know for sure, if we go with the assumption that the lack of studio DVD's is that they weren't financially viable. Based on that premise, they only have 4 options:
1) raise the price 2) cut costs 3) increase their sales volume 4) stop making DVD's
They chose option 2, filming a live show instead of producing their normal studio DVD.
Would you have rather they continued to produce the studio DVD's, but cut the production costs of those to make them viable? Maybe get rid of all of the visual elements and turn CT into audio only riffing, like a Rifftrax VOD production.
Or would you have rather continued to get the same kind of studio DVD, but paid significantly more for it?

I just finished mine as well and it is the first time I laughed at almost every joke for CT. The audience was not distracting at all, and they actually interact with each other quite a bit (which is something that's been lacking in the previous releases). I think the flubbed lines made it even funnier to. You can bet I'm sold on the Live DVDs.
