So what was memorable in music last year for you? (the good, the bad, the sad?)
* For one, I got to see the Tubes and Aimee Mann live... in town. Which was great because it seems I always have to drive to the big city to see a show I like.
The Tubes were a free outdoor show and while they are older and the show a bit smaller... they sounded wonderful. And Quay did show up to sing WPOD!
Aimee is simply one of the most talented performers ever. She might not have a beautiful voice (kind of nasally) but as a songwriter and musician she' s outstanding and what a delightful show she puts on.
* For CDs I didn't buy a lot. Kelly Clarkson actually released her best CD (She's either finally learned how to write a chorus, or hired a co-writer who can) and I got something by Lenka, which was decent.
But the big CD story for me was the Beatles! The Stereo box set was simply beautiful... but the mono actually revealed new treasures. Sgt Peppers and the White Album are different enough that it was like hearing them again for the first time (Peppers was the better of the 2, the White Album was interesting... but it's like the sloppy, garage band version of the album)
"Please, Please Me" (whole CD) never sounded better in mono and it went from an okay album to an outstanding one. My what a difference a quality release can have.
I've spent the last part of 09 just exploring these treasures. I also watched all the movies (save for MMT) and Anthology and though I don't play games and don't have a player... I love the package for the Rock band thingy which included instruments based on what they played.
* Personally I finished my music project. I recorded every (good to okay) song I ever wrote (I've conveniently forgotten the truly awful ones). I burned them on CD. Printed out every lyric w/tabs, and a paragraph on the hows and whys of each song, which I have loaded into a book.
I recorded over 220 tracks on my home 16 track machine, it took well over a year to complete. I might not be world famous, but it was important for me that all these numbers not fade away. My legacy can now be handed down to the generations.
So those were the highlights of my musical 2009.
