Lars Von Trier films often make me feel like complete crap. Especially "Breaking the Waves" Funny you should mention him, because just today I finally got around to seeing Antichrist. I actually loved it; great, unsettling atmosphere and imagery, spectacular acting. The guy who loaned it to me (who liked it as well) was all, "Oh, it's gross and really polarizing," but I didn't see what was particularly offensive about it. I didn't find it gross (it did have a couple of squicky scenes, but as a veteran horror movie watcher, they seemed pretty mild to me), and the claims of misogyny that have apparently been leveled at it seemed to ring hollow. I mean, I don't think Lars was saying in the film what people thought he was saying about the nature of women; I didn't read it as misogynistic at all. Quite the opposite, in fact. Anyway, the same guy who loaned me that movie also loaned me Michael Haneke's newest, The White Ribbon, so if I have time I will watch that tomorrow.

Lars Von Trier films often make me feel like complete crap. Especially "Breaking the Waves" When Breaking was playing at the Biograph here in Chicago, they sold adramamine (sp?) in the lobby. Cupcake, White Ribbon is supposed to be superb!

Cupcake, White Ribbon is supposed to be superb! Oh, it was, it was. Excellent film; for some reason it sort of reminded me of The Crucible, Village of the Damned, and an Ingmar Bergman film, all rolled into one gorgeous package. I was riveted.
