Okay, so I consider myself a pretty well read Adventure Game player. However, one of the most popular Adventure Game series ever is the Monkey Island series of games, and I've yet to play it.
The other day, The Secret Of Monkey Island's special edition went on sale, and I knew I couldn't pass up the chance. Apparently, this game comes with two modes of play: in addition to the classic version, the entire game has also undergone a rehaul so that it's shinier, more graphically up-to-date, etc.
So my question to other gamers out there: do you think I should try the Classic version first, or the Updated version first?

Classic, no question. I don't have any problems with them updating the graphics, but the older graphics have a charm all of their own, and I think you'll appreciate that more if you play the original first. Either way, have fun - that's probably my favorite game series of all time.

That was my initial thought, but then I thought, what if that prevents me from giving the update a fair chance? What if I go all, "Joel is way better, he has more heart than this Mike guy" on the update just by virtue of seeing it first?

That is a fair point, but I think it's probably less likely than going the other way. Just from my own experience, I have no problem with the updated version, but I'm less sure what I'd think if I'd started with the newer one. In any case, the game's already been through three or four graphical versions, and it's solid enough that it's enjoyable in each case. Maybe you should just flip a coin.

Good idea. I'll just flip a coin.

So which did you end up doing? Did you like it? Did you forget about playing the game at all? I MUST KNOW

I've been swapping back and forth, honestly. Just hitting F10 whenever I get curious about what it might look like in the other fashion.
And I have been enjoying it, no denying that. I'm currently puzzling my way through Part III, trying to figure out what the next thing to do is now that I'm at Monkey Island and working out the basic geography.

One of the funniest games I have ever played. I used to own it back in the day on my Amiga. I love the Monkey Island series. You probably know about this already, but Telltale Games recently completed the latest installment in the series, Tales of Monkey Island, which is excellent and recommended if you're a fan.

I wanted to like the new series, but I had to force myself to trudge through the demo with the *awful* control scheme, and couldn't make myself go any further than that. It's like the worst aspects of the 3-D Escape from Monkey Island engine but with even more awkward mouse controls shoehorned in instead of the keyboard.

It's a little awkward at first, I agree. But after sticking with it for a while, I sort of got used to it and it wasn't so bad. You might want to give it another try!

Man, looking at the side-by-side comparisons of the new graphics, they did a great updating pretty much every character model...except Guybrush. His just looks terrible to me.
