easily my favorite version of whiskey in the jar, by spailpin. i found a used cd years ago at a yard sale of irish music i picked up for a couple of bucks. it had a lot of different bands and artists on it, but spailpin was on more than any other. they have a very genuine sound and some of their songs are just too beautiful to me. besides this one, i particularly like white, orange and green, but i couldn't find it on youtube.
another great band - the dublin ramblers. they were also on that cd.
i couldn't find my favorite by them, arthur mcbride, but i love this one too.

BUMP!
i have made a pleasant discovery in irish music in the last year - tara o'grady. she has a great voice - very sarah vaughan/billie holidayish. she does traditional irish music in a jazzy, bluesy style i really like.
i actually did something i had been threatening to do for years last year, and produced a two hour tribute to irish music at the radio station. i used the music from my own collection, as well as some from my dad's and a friend of mine lent me some of hers. but i could have made it into a ten hour show with all the music i wanted to use, but didn't.
plissken - i used that song you posted here 'if i ever leave this world alive' by flogging molly. i've listened to it about a kajillion times since then.
the video is very low budget, but the song is pretty cool.

That was great. I tend to enjoy old school, female, jazz singers (Nina Simone comes to mind), and that definitely fits the bill.
Anyway, glad to spread the love of Flogging Molly. I also could have sworn I was posting in the thread last year, rather than 2011. Something, something, whiskey...

so glad to bump this!
i am ashamed that i am just now coming around on cutthroat shamrock. i saw them this past weekend in knoxville and they were great. local to east tennessee, they have a pretty large and loyal group of fans. they've been together for 11 years - how did i miss them?? i LOVE this kind of music. anyway, enjoy.

nice, db. i love the irish rovers. and i have not yet heard that song with alison krauss and the chieftains. i have heard her sing red is the rose with them - she has a perfect voice for them.
and there is never a wrong time for flogging molly. man, i'm glad solgroupie started this thread. she must have been awesome.

Okay, this isn't traditional Irish music. It's a paean for an adoptive land that Phil loved so much:
And then some more from The Chieftains. You can never go wrong with them:

I know some think of Celtic Thunder as more of an Irish pop or "boy" band and not really traditional, but this is a fun one.

no, that was great! they are pretty, but celtic thunder has put out some good stuff - i love those types of irish songs; like from the clancy brothers - they tell a story, they're funny and they really get the audience involved. good drinkin' songs. and just when you think you've heard everything - actually, the chili pipers are pretty awesome. they've done a lot of covers, but their more traditional tunes are my favorites.

i had a very low key st. patrick's day this year. now that i'm not living in tennessee anymore, i missed the last performance from cutthroat shamrock - the band is breaking up. that's a nice version of whiskey in the jar, crowschmo!
