According to the little article I read, a French paper bought the pics and had half the country in tears. It's France, but still....

cool. i can't tell how many chicks there are - a couple of heads popped out from beneath either the male or female, but i couldn't see them that well. i have been checking the other eagle cam every day. i've gotten attached to wobbly joe, fuzzy joe and just plain joe. and i like checking in on the hummingbird cam - there are two babies there - hummy and birdhead. i don't check on the owl cam that much because every single time i do, they are all sleeping.

Went out to the farm Saturday for Easter dinner and my mom told me to go look in the tree in the center of the driveway, where I saw the big old head of a Great Horned Owl nesting. You can just make out its "horns." It was getting dark and my phone camera sucks, but I was only about fifteen feet from it and could see it plain as day, if my camera couldn't. I wandered around the tree and he seemed pretty unhappy about that. I named him Swivels. Why an owl (of all things!) would choose to nest at the very center of the driveway of an active farm is beyond me. (And I mean center, it's a solitary tree in a bordered cutout that serves as the center of the turnaround between the house and the main barn and the main tool shed.)

And since albatrosses have been showing up all over for me lately, I figured I'd post this awesome picture. Scale. Wow. My niece made a... grandniece? One of my great joys is buying children's books for her. I got her one about a pirate called Tough Boris. In one of the pictures you see that Tough Boris's ship's prow--not just figurehead but the whole prow--is an albatross. Pretty cool allusion to the Ancient Mariner. She's pretty far from appreciating it, but someday.... For now, DESSERT!!

Man. I swear, owls are not owls. That's a character from Labyrinth or The Dark Crystal wearing an owl.

i've seen this before - i might have posted it somewhere at some point. but it's worth posting again - a young guy who rescued a baby hummingbird and mothered it until it was ready to go out on its own. very sweet.
