There are three main incarnations of Ren and Stimpy.
original Spumco cartoons budget/child/deadline friendly Games cartoons EDGY Adult Party Cartoon
My favorite TV shows ever are the first and third incarnations. The one in the middle sucks. Here's a brief history.
original: In a world where all cartoons are based on toy lines or older cartoons...used either to milk an existing franchise, promote a crappy toy line, or both...Nickelodeon decides to try actually making some good stuff.
Games: John Kricfalusi, the creator of the show, is fired for missing deadlines, going over-budget, and not being child friendly. Ironically, the problems actually get WORSE once he's fired...or at least, the child-friendly and deadline problems. I'm not sure about the budget.
APC: John K. is brought back for an adult-oriented revival. It's canceled after nine episodes for unknown reasons.

I love Ren & Stimpy. I remember parents getting annoyed over the show when I was growing up, but I never saw anything wrong with it. I thought it was awesome! And I'm still a fan to this day.
I spotted some Ren & Stimpy merchandise @ Hot Topic the other day along with shirts from other cartoons I used to watch like Doug, Rocko's Modern Life, Angry Beavers, Tiny Toons, etc. Memories! =D

Ren and Stimpy were pretty much doomed when Nickelodeon started breathing down their neck about every joke within the script...
The resurection on Spike TV (despite how short it was) was pretty much what John needed in the first place, a channel and execs who pretty much said "Hey, go crazy" rather then "OMG, DON'T DO THAT!" with the scripts.

First off, R&S doesn't use scripts. They don't have the funny drawings the show is known for, do they?
Also, Spike actually commanded John K. be MORE gross. That shows in some parts...such as the "sawing" sequence in Altruists.

I loved the one that featured raw, pulsing dental nerves. A cartoon has never made me shiver before seeing that.

I loved Ren and Stimpy as a kid.
But the Adult Party Cartoon blew chunks. It just was not funny at all.

First off, R&S doesn't use scripts. Erm....last time I checked....animated shows use scripts, unless all animated shows are improvised...

No. After plot outlines, the show went straight to storyboards. John K. has elaborated on this in too many interviews.

I thought you were saying the show didn't use scripting at all, which would be insane for an animated show. Storyboards make sense for a visual medium, but I just think of them as a type of script in my mind.

a bar where i lived during ren and stimpy's height of popularity used to turn their tvs to the show - whenever it came on. it would be full of rowdy drunken college students who would immediately shut up and watch. it was like daycare for a bunch of drunk kids.

The "Fire Dogs" episode from season one (?) is one of the funniest shows I've seen in my life. R and S jumped the shark bigtime after John K left.

Lucky 90s kids. Being a 14 year old in 2010 sucks.

I remember a dog-show episode, that Stimpy posed-down for..."BAM!"
