With King Felix returning and the acquisition of Cliff Lee the Mariners have given fans reason to hope. First time in a while I've used "Mariners" and "hope" in the same sentence ("hopeless" doesn't count).
But after watching Heyward's first at-bat with Atlanta I'm jealous. His first big league at bat is against a guy as intimidating as Zambrano and he stood in there against a fastball inside & high like he was studying it in slo-mo. Even without the 3-run, line-drive home run that was an impressive at-bat for a 20-year-old.

Just my opinion but Carlos Zambrano is over-rated. But Heyward looks like the real deal, and the Braves could really surprise some people.

I'd be in a pretty darn good mood if Joe Nathan hadn't hurt himself before the season. Now he's out for 18 months and the Twins have decided on Jon Rauch to hold down the closer role. Talk about not the same.
Nathan has been damn formidable the last six years. I can't believe he's going to miss this season, of all seasons. New park, recharged team, but no Nathan. Rats.

Just my opinion but Carlos Zambrano is over-rated. I approve that opinion! I'd definitely call him intimidating, though. He's a monster of a guy and he always looks to be on the verge of 'roid rage. I guess you don't make the big leagues if you're easily intimidated, though.

As a lifelong Cubs fan, I experienced an entirely new feeling today: one of complete apathy.
Let me explain.
In 2007 and 2008, I was ecstatic and full of great hope as the Cubs were the best team in the NL, only to watch them piss away the playoffs without a fight both years. So in 2009, I was angry at them. Like an insecure abused wife, I still loved them and went back to them, but I enjoyed their lousy season as comeuppance for how they hurt me. But today was weird. I just didn't care. When Zambrano and Samarszjdszia got shelled, I just said, "Huh."
In other news, the Rockies look great again, and will certainly be ignored by the national media, even if (when) they rattle off a 20-game winning streak and make it to the World Series.

^me too. It's not that bad, and it was nice to see Young put a good swing on the ball. The umps are giving some hometown calls against the Twins at the plate, in my opinion. I'm an hour and fifteen minutes into the Twins' season and I'm already grumbling about the umps

The team must still be in Spring Training mode. Except for Delmon.

I think they're great to have as a "second" team, for the drama, if nothing else. White Sox are off to a decent start. A few problems last night notwithstanding, I like this year's lineup much better than last year's. They got rid of some of the sentimental holdovers from the Series win (Podsednick, Dye, Crede, Contreras - and be glad he's not with the Rockies, Mr. A). The Twins may be hard to beat this year, but at least the White Sox seem to be in the hunt from the lineup. Too bad Peavey's first outing wasn't better last night...but it was cold. Heh.

I'll say this now and get it out of the way:
"Cubs suck! Cubs suck! Cubs suck!"
And I'm a fan.

Took my son to the first game of the season yesterday. Awesomeness. He finally tried the batting cages in the "Fundamentals" area for kids at U.S. Cellular. My boy's growing up...
He also had a moment of split loyalties. Jim Thome used to be his favorite Sox player before he got traded. So Thome comes up for the last at bat for the Twins with a chance to kill our lead and win the game. He honestly didn't know whether to be happy or sad when they the Sox ended up winning.
I was just glad to see the Sox finally catch a break. Did they deserve to win, though...? Hmm...

Heh. Jim Thome in a Twins uniform. All due respect to your son, but I giggle at the thought of all the broken hearts on the south side The Sox certainly didn't deserve to win that way. Ulger clearly should have held Hardy at third with the top of the order coming up. Stupid. But whatever. I'll take two out of three from the White Sox on the road any time.

It was actually the bottom of the order coming up. Likely wouldn't have mattered either way, as Punto vs. Jenks isn't a matchup that favors the Twins, to put it mildly. Congrats to the Twins on their first ever Target Field regular season victory. Things couldn't have gone any better today.
