The only thing I was wondering is what would happen if a 90mph, 100mph wind blew across the flow. Would it actually pick up hot particles of lava and fly them for miles? I'm sure the particles would cool down but would they cool down enough to not burn someone or start a fire?
Anyway, the news today is not as good. The new finger picked up speed overnight and is now .3 miles from Apa'a St heading right for the dump. It traveled 425yds, and if it continues flowing at that rate it would hit Pahoa Rd. within a week and Highway 130 a few days later, going through a residential area in Pahoa. Just have to hope it slows and stagnates again.

I see I haven't updated on the lava flow in almost a month. It started to slow down a few weeks ago. It did destroy one house but the flow front hasn't really moved since October 30th. This mornings observation of the flow shows almost no activity within miles of the front. There are breakouts miles up the hill near where it entered the crack system and nearer to the Pu'u O'o vent. Here's the latest information. We're all hoping it flows more towards where it was before, away from the most populous areas, otherwise this will be just a short reprieve.

man, that sucks for the people who live in the one house that was destroyed. talk about feeling singled out. i saw this recently on tumblr and thought of you, chicken - Headstone in Hawaii Spared by Lava Flow: As a slow-moving lava approached a cemetery in a rural Hawaii town, Aiko Sato placed flowers at the headstone of the family plot she’s tended to over the years, thinking it would be the last time she would see it. Surprisingly, the lava had covered the cemetery but spared this headstone. Sato’s aunt, Eiko Kajiyama, 83, said she was heartbroken when she heard lava covered the cemetery. Upon hearing the good news, she was overjoyed. Kajiyama said it feels like Pele, the Hawaiian volcano goddess, spared the headstone. “We’re so thankful we know the tomb is still there.” Her sister and brother, who died as infants, are buried there, along with the urns of her parents.

Up until this lava flow I didn't even know there was a Japanese cemetery over there. Isn't it incredible what lava will spare? It covered most of the cemetery and that one house and property then stopped. They're talking about maybe even re-opening the road through Pahoa. The geologist are checking the flow near the northern end of the crack system to see if there's lava in the tube system feeding the front. If not, they'll open the road.
Spice, are you on Tumblr? I don't know anyone on it so I've never joined.

tumblr is cool. but i don't know anyone there, either. i follow rifftrax, some mst fan and a few chaplin fans, along with some other weirdos i've come across. it's definitely a good time waster.
it's stupid, but i keep thinking lava should adhere to seasons or something. like, lave season is almost over, so this should all stop soon or something. you may as well click your heels together and wish really hard that the flow would stop.

Well my Tumblr page is tellovishous.tumblr.com. I'm always reblogging MST stuff. I waste most of my time there as well.

If I decide to join Tumblr I'll look for the both of you. I agree on the lava season. It should be like a hurricane season. I propose lava can only flow between April and October. Every flow must stop by the end of every October and wait until the next April to start again. Come on people! Let's get this done! On Thursday I was walking to my doctors appointment when unbeknownst to me my cell phone camera decided to take a few pictures: Could you have guessed it would be raining? I was jaywalking to my appointment so the nice action shot bend to the image. Then I thought I fixed the problem and turned the camera off... Well what do you? Isn't the asphalt beautiful?I finally walk into the doctors office and take a seat near the entrance to dry off. I then see that I clicked that asphalt picture and I'm about to erase it when I figure, aw hell, let's just keep it but take an actually thought out picture through the doctors door to show my incredible journey: And so my wondrous trip across the road from the McDonald's restaurant side to my doctors office was complete and I survived! And so went another day in Hilo. Mahalo for reading and until next time, Aloha!

... ... Lava flow information ... ... It's now flowing along a slope that's moving towards the NNE and towards where they thought it would go earlier, right where Pahoa Market & Longs Drugs/CVS is located...but within about a hundred yards of this slope line is another slope that heads almost north and within about a mile of where I live. INTRUDER ALERT! INTRUDER ALERT! And it's flowing very fast right now, over 400yds a day, so if it heads this way it'll be close by within weeks. Here's the link again. If it stays on that lower blue line we're fine but you can see (If you're looking at the map. Go look! ) how close those slope lines are. They wont know which direction it heads in until it gets to that point. Hoping for the best but something tells me sooner or later this area will have to evacuate. Unless Pu'u O'o stops feeding lava for awhile it's almost a guarantee it'll cover everything from Ainaloa to Pahoa.

Can't you just put up anti-lave sand bags? I mean, that's a smart question, right?

I can see the commercial:
"Are you having problems with lava? Boy do we have a solution for you. It's Cheech and Chong's anti-lave bags. See how they soak up that lava? No mess! And just look at the way the lava avoids contact after touching the bags. True lava repellent! Plus, it has a 'natural' sweet swell. So hurry and get your Cheech & Chong anti-lave bags. You'll be glad you did."

And if your lava flow lasts more than four hours, go see your doctor.
