Childe Roland to the Theater (and TV) Comes!Back in the day I enjoyed the first three books in Stephen King's Dark Tower series, but with looong waits between books I lost interest. From what I remember it could make a fantastic movie trilogy though, especially with a great director like Ron Howard. Supposedly it'll become a TV series, too. I'll definitely check both out.

I just can't imagine this working on film unless the plot and characters are really stripped down. The first book, maybe, but every book after that has more than enough story for several films. MAYBE a TV series would work.

I'd love to see this - if it's going to be any good - but as CH said, there's just too much. Plus, King's work notoriously translates poorly to film and video.

We're accustomed to films including everything from the book?

No, that isn't entirely my point. Specifically, in the example of King's writing, I have found that much of the story is internal dialogue of the characters, and an integral part of the stories he builds. I find this is the part that is difficult to translate into a visual medium. Some narration to represent that can be done, but I personally don't want a whole movie to have voice-over or narration, but that's just me. In the case of The Dark Tower series - which I have read all books, and really like - I am skeptical that the first 3 books (much less all 7) - would translate well. I could be wrong, because the physical landscape is integral to the series, and that may suffice. Regardless, I'll watch whatever they make, because I really like the series.

I was thinking that Ron Howard is the best reason to hope it might be good, but then I saw he directed Jim Carrey in the Grinch remake. Still, most of his stuff is at least okay, and with material this interesting maybe he can make it great.

I read the first three books, then I couldn't take it anymore. Sorry to anyone who liked it, but I thought it just got too stupid. "Blane is a pain"? Then that bear robot thing, or whatever the hell it was. I definitely don't think it would translate well into a movie, or even a series.

One of my favorite series of all time, even though it got INCREDIBLY stupid as it went on. I think at a certain point Stephen King just went "screw it" and put in every ridiculous thing he could think of. But it was one hell of a fun adventure.
I don't think it would translate well to the screen, especially considering there are only a bare few good Stephen King movie adaptations as it is, but I'll probably end up watching this, if it happens. And I'll end up disappointed and pissed off and sad.
