If there's a television series less-neccesary to watch on Blu-Ray than MST3K, I can't think of it. The show's charm has always been in its cheerful tackiness and in the beat-up film prints used for the movies. Who needs to see the Mitchell sex scene in HD?! Not necessarily the movie segments but the host segments with the vibrant colors would be dazzling. MST3K was shot on videotape, right? If so, the episodes will never, ever look any better than they already do. Videotape cannot upgraded to HD. That's why big series like Star Trek: The Next Generation aren't on blu-ray. Videotaped shows are stuck in 480i resolution, end of story. The only reason to put the series on blu-ray would be so you could cram a whole season of shows onto two discs. Now, if for some reason MST3K was shot on film stock, the show would be ripe for an HD upgrade. As for double dipping? Nope. Got 'em all. Single releases, box sets... I see no reason to re-buy what I have. Keep cranking out unreleased episodes, and everything will be fine.

HDNet was able to show HD versions of both "Hogan's Heroes" and "Charlie's Angels" because they were shot on film, not video tape. I love HD and Blu-ray as much as the next guy, but as was already stated, MST is one of the shows I love so much that I'll watch it in SD. It would be nice to have "MST3K: The Movie" on Blu-ray though. Not holding my breath on that.

nerdy nit #1: there is such thing as HD videotape. But MST was shot in SD, of course.
nerdy nit #2: ST-TNG was shot on film. But edited on SD video tape, so same result.
The net effect of this post on the primary points already made is zero.

I'd double dip to replace the very few eps I still have on VHS, but that's because they're ancient and wearing out. I already have Sky and Official versions of enough episodes that I don't need to buy multiple sets--unless there were some really kick ass extras. Like a button you could push and the Brain of your choice would appear in your living room to kick back and watch an episode with you.

nerdy nit #1: there is such thing as HD videotape. Yeah, being a frequent visitor @ AVS Forum I'm aware of the D-VHS format. I never bit on it. Last tape format I did was S-VHS in 2000. Recorded some MST SciFi eps on it and some Sopranos. In the Fall of that same year I bought my first DVR (TiVo) and that was such a major improvement over any other archiving method that I never looked back. There might come a better media storage method than the hard drive in the future, but I don't see anything on the horizon. Back to topic...

D-VHS was standard def. (dodges rocks and rotten fruit)
Some HD tape formats in common use now: HDCAM, HDV, DVCPRO HD
But yeah, acquire on cards and store on hard drives is da thing now, but archiving on tape (in HD) is nowhere near dead.

having bought most of the later eps (4-10) from sky around about Rhino's third collection, I've never replaced what I already have with something new, no matter the geegaws attached.

let me just say if Shout! would release a Ring of Terror DVD that does not make me want to vomit every time i look at it, that would be ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC
