50 cents for a Criterion? lucky indeed. The 50 cent Criterion came when a local video store was closing. I got both discs but not the booklet, and the discs were in great shape considering they were rentals. Works for me. ;D

Mrs. Shep and I caught "Marnie" on the big screen recently at the BFI. It's still not my favorite from Hitch, but wow, I have a whole new appreciation for this one. Looked absolutely gorgeous and the audience really seemed to enjoy it, too.

Blu-ray.com and DVDtalk also give it an average rating on the visual presentation. The films that seem to be the problem ones are The Birds, Family Plot, Frenzy, Rear Window and The Man Who Know Too Much, although the last two films complaints tend to be on color fluctuations which I believe is inherent in the original negatives. They were a part of a handful of films that Hitchcock had kept in a vault and had been unavailable for viewing for decades. Blu-ray.com is down at the moment, which is a shame because they had a film-by-film review, but here's the link for DVDTalk: www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/56856/alfred-hitchcock-the-masterpiece-collection-limited-edition/

I don't know if everyone has seen this, but they have found one of Hitchcock's earliest films, 3 of 6 reels survive. He was co-director and writer for this melodrama about twin sisters (one good, one bad). The White Shadow (1924) Cutts-Hitchcock See what survives for free... www.filmpreservation.org/preserved-films/screening-room/the-white-shadow-1924The print has some bad patches but looks good overall. The movie itself isn't a masterpeice, but the camerawork is stylish and well composed.
