Thanks for the link....very cool.
I've been meaning to come in here and post just as a general kind of thing.
If you love history, come out to events. If you want to participate, there are plenty of people willing to help you get started. There are also other time periods of reenacting, such as Napoleonic, WW1 and WW2, and of course things like SCA and ancient times too.
The best advice is to first of all, find a time period that you like or that you would like to know more about. Then, and this is important, hang out with those people BEFORE you make a commitment to join them. If you decide to reeanct, you will be spending a lot of time with these people, especially when you are just starting out, and you need to be a good fit. Some of the Civil War units have an attendence requirement(my unit doesn't but some do, and I can only speak for Civil War reenacting)so you may want to find that out too.
Once you have decided to join a group, unit, etc. talk to someone in the unit to find out what you need to buy and how long you have to buy the items. Most groups have "loaner" equipment and clothing you can borrow to try out and see if you like it(again, only know Civil War for sure, but it would make sense that other groups do as well).
Have fun at what you do. If you're not having fun, there's no point in doing it. If a group takes everything so seriously that they aren't having fun, you should probably stay away from them, or at least not join that particular group.
Different time periods offer different opportunities. If you are a woman and want to be a soldier, for example, the latest you could do that would be Civil War. Back in those days a physical exam was simply how many fingers you had, for loading the weapon, how many teeth, for tearing open the cartridge, and how many toes, so you could march in a straight line. You could also be a spy, for example, or be a civilian traveling with the Army in some capacity such as regimental cook
If you're interested in medicine, there are lots of time periods you could do, from Napoleanic on up.
I guess my point is find something you like and go for it!!!!
