I've been following this film's pre-production with great anticipation, as I loved the LOTR movies (despite some major flaws), and I think The Hobbit could actually make for an even better set of films. Unfortunately, it seems that Guillermo del Toro has dropped out as director, seemingly over delays and the extended time commitment involved in these films. I loved Peter Jackson's visual style for the trilogy, and I couldn't think of anyone better than del Toro for the prequel films. He's apparently still on board for some of the screenwriting, and as he's a pretty hands-on filmmaker, I hope that work he's done so far persists in the overall feel of the film. I'm not sure who else fits the bill for a fantasy work of this nature, but I'm pretty anxious for the next announcement.
Well, maybe this will free up del Toro for the fabled "At the Mountains of Madness" film.
^Oh, good. It's not just me. I was afraid the Lost fans would come after me with their pitchforks. And from what I understand Luke Evans isn't horrible, but every time I look at him I think someone made a Heath Ledger clone. I also don't get sticking Legolas back in for anything other than marketing. I get that everyone wanted to come back because they had such an amazing time on the trilogy, but it should at least be legit.
On a positive note, I am still happy about Martin Freeman's casting. I adore him and think he'll be great in this. I like Cumberbatch as Smaug-the voice won't need much tinkering and he'll probably do great with the physicality needed for the motion-capture. I do reserve the right to make Sherlock/Watson jokes in the theater though!
Also saw people like Richard Armitage and Lee Pace on the cast list, which is great. Stephen Fry as the Mayor amuses me everytime I think about it. And a Doctor as a wizard-Slyvester McCoy!

I can't stand Evangeline Lilly. I feel like staying in my room and pouting for the next couple years.
At least she has elvish features
Well anyway, hi there, folks. You know, I'd been having trouble with velvet leaf, uh, cutworm and, uh, foxtail and, well, that's when the representative from Monsanto came out to my farm. He recommended a pre-emergent, inferral mixture of Lorsban with Atrazine in a tank mix and I told him to get off my land. - Farmer Joel

While I'm not interested in the Hobbit, del Toro's dream project was mentioned in the first post, so I wanted to pipe in an update on that. Universal sadly decided NOT to make "At The Mountains of Madness" - due to the budget concerns and because del Toro wanted the freedom to make it an R rated film.
Meanwhile, Universal pumped 200 mil on a film based on this...
and I'm not kidding.
(Back to the Hobbit - with apologies for interrupting the thread)
