Shout! Factory acquired the rights to the Showa era Gamera movies, and the first one is out on DVD. This is no cheap release. This is the first time the original movie in it's complete form with Japanese dialogue has been available in the US. This is made from the cleaned up Japanese release used for the BluRay release in Japan. More Gamera movies will be coming out soon.
I know what you're thinking, but no, Shout! Factory can't use these for MST3K because they don't have the Sandy Frank dub.
I picked up the first movie, the only one that came out in black and white. I was actually surprised by how well it was directed. Sure, there's a lot of cheesiness, but there's real movie-making chops in here. There's a commentary track by August Ragone, author of Eiji Tsuburaya: Master of Monsters. Unfortunately, he's a very dull and uninteresting speaker. Which is a shame because he's got a lot of good information to impart. There's a retrospective look at the Gamera franchise including interviews with several of the people who were involved in it, including Noriaki Yuasa, the director of all the Showa era movies.
This is a must have for all movie monster fans.
