Sad news from the world of Deadliest Catch. Phil Harris, captain of the Cornelia Marie, has passed away at 53. He was a gruff but surprisingly likable guy as he was depicted on the show. www.nytimes.com/2010/02/11/arts/television/11harris.html?_r=1I've watched this show for years, and even though they've probably mentioned his age before, he looked much older than 53. He had already had some serious health issues on the show that were scary enough. The show certainly won't be the same without him. Rest well, sir. EDIT - Changed the link as the old one had expired.

I was a fan too. Now he can smoke, drink, and curse in the crab fields of the Great Beyond. My condolences to his family.

Last nights episode was Phil's last. A very moving episode indeed. R.I.P. Phil you will be missed. What a character that loved life to it's fullest.

I just got done with it last night - heavy stuff. One person I was watching with had to leave the room - the episode brought up a few issues a little too close to home.
I really thought Discovery handled the whole thing quite well. I feel for those brothers, man. I never would have thought a show about a bunch of crab fishermen could be so compelling and that I would care about the characters this much.
Again, rest well, Phil.

Just got through watching. I agree that Discovery told the story really well. A first class depiction of the struggle with death that many face. Excellently done.

Just following up, the season finale closed out beautifully.
I can't believe the Cornelia Marie was out there that much later than all the rest. What a season. A few thoughts:
* I really feel for the Harris brothers and hope Jake gets his life in order. They always talked about him being the one to take over the boat, but it looked so much like Josh was the guy to go to when Phil went down. I just want them both to be okay, whatever path they choose.
* I was a little disappointed to never hear from the actual Cornelia Marie, Phil's business partner. I'm sure she had her reasons, but she couldn't come on camera to say something nice about Phil?
* I understand the "behind the scenes" ep about the cameramen this year was excellent. I only saw the first ten minutes of the latest one and I had to leave due to an obligation. Hope I can check it out.
Thanks for everything, Phil. Keep sailing.
Now maybe an admin could move this to The Dead Talk Back so Phil and his thread can rest in proper peace? Thoughts on Phil are still welcome, of course, but if we need a Deadliest Catch thread I'm sure we can start it.
