I love the old Warner Bros. cartoons, and Tom & Jerry. Who doesn't? But my favorite series growing up was always Woody Woodpecker. You know how much I respect and admire you Mr, A, but oh my, how different we are. I love Warner Bros. cartoons, Tom & Jerry, not so much. And Woody Woodpecker? What an annoying little twirp. I don't hunt but he makes me want to shoot birds. But still I respect and admire you. PHANTOM JOHNSON'S RIGHT!! Woody annoyed the HECK outta me...but still I respect and admire Mr. A, as well.

Thanks for the respect. But I still like Woody.
I do have a couple volumes of the Golden Collection from Warner Bros., though. And between those DVDs and the Animaniacs DVDs, my children are growing up with good role models.

There's a single disc "best of" Woody Woodpecker release that I'm thinking of getting (you know, after I have all the Looney Tunes and Popeyes and such).
I saw very few Woody Woodpecker or Chilly Willy shorts as a kid. We only had the syndicated Woody Woodpecker Show for a while, and I tried to follow it as much as a kid who couldn't even tell time yet could. I probably saw it three or four times. I wanted to watch it because I had a vested interest in the character: a Woody Woodpecker storybook, an old hand-me-down, was a favorite of mine as a child.

In terms of editing, there are a few problems with the Rocky and Bullwinkle DVDs. Apparently they couldn't use the original music so the openings all have new tunes (there's very little music in the show itself, so no problem there). Also, despite the R&B segments all being in chronological order the middle portions of the episodes (Fractured Fairy Tales, Peabody, ect.) are all out of order - apparently to spread them out so fans of any particular segment would get a good sample with each season set. The only change that really bothers me though is the new, unifrom title: the seasons originally went under different names (the frist few were "Rocky and his Friends," the next were "The Bullwinkle Show") which have been replaced with a "Rocky and Bullwinkle and Friends" title card. The title card wouldn't be bad by itself, but a new narrator, trying his damndest to sound like the original, cuts in to say the new title. A bit destracting. (EDIT - Dec. 17) I'm glad I only bought the first season. A full series set comes out next year and there's no word on when Season 5 will be released individually. See how mad some fans are in the comments section: www.amazon.com/Rocky-Bullwinkle-Friends-Complete--/dp/B00465I1BA/ref=sr_1_4?s=dvd&ie=UTF8&qid=1292637998&sr=1-4

According to toon expert Jerry Beck, who's often a consultant on these types of things, there is a DVD set in the planning stages at WB to include all of the cartoons considered too offensive for release anywhere else. This would include the infamous Censored 11 (withdrawn from syndication in the '60s because of African American stereotypes).
I'm excited about this because two Bugs Bunny toons are in this category, including Bugs Bunny Nips the Nips. Despite having very harsh Japanese stereotypes it does feature the greatest Bugs Bunny disguise ever: a geisha!

...and, to the relief of all the fans who bought Rocky and Bullwinkle Seasons 1-4 when they came out: tvshowsondvd reports an individual release for season 5 in March.

I grew up watching Ren & Stimpy, and was very shocked that Nickelodeon's censors let Stimpy use the word "Lord" when he sang "Kumbaya" in one episode. They let them get away with more than they should have been allowed to get away with. However, they did cut down on the grotesque, disgusting visuals once John K. left.

^I never liked Ren and Stimpy, or any of John K.'s work, as a kid. It seemed to me a lot of grotesque with very little else underneath.

I remember watching Stimpy's First Fart and thinking "Oh, my God. This is classic". I also remember watching the one episode where they make fun of Roman Catholicism and wondering "How did this even get on the air"? But it was pretty hilarious!

The first season of R and S are classics and among my favorite cartoons of all-time. The Firedogs episode might actually be my favorite cartoon of ever. I wet 'em for years every time I watched it.

Hey, if you get the new retro channel Antenna TV (it just replaced the similar RTV where we are) they're airing 3 hours of Totally Tooned In every Saturday. It's apparently a television package that's been running in Europe for over a decade comprised of UPA and Screen Gems theatrical cartoons, with a Mr. Magoo short headlining each episode.

I enjoy Looney Tunes quite a bit, but the Golden Collections have never been high on my priorities list. I got volume 2 dirt cheap, watched them and had my laughs, but I probably wouldn't pay more than $20 for any more volumes. Unfortunately even used they usually go for more than that.
However, I'm a big fan of the Disney cartoons of the same era, and ate up the Walt Disney Treasures collections. I have all the Mickey, Donald, Goofy, Pluto, and Silly Symphonies sets, even the Rarities and Oswald the Lucky Rabbit for good measure. Oswald is very entertaining, I must say. I hope more of his cartoons get found some day. As well as the Alice features on the Rarities set. I would definitely like to see more of those. Unfortunately the Treasures series seems to be dead in the water so all hope of that sinks with it.
I can't believed Leonard Malton and Roy Disney overlooked the three solo Chip 'n' Dale cartoons for release in these sets. How did Humphrey the Bear make the cut in Rarities yet Chip 'n' Dale get shafted (And Figaro the Cat in Pluto...AND MICKEY'S MOUSE WORKS IN DONALD!)? Sure, two of them are in the $10 Chip 'n' Dale DVD they have compiled, but the Lone Chipmunks remains unreleased. I also cry foul at the overlooking of Freewayphobia and Goofy's Freeway Troubles, when Donald in Mathamagic Land and The Litterbug got released.
Oh well. I can find all of them on YouTube.

^I'm just the opposite. I was always an advocate for the Looney Toons stable over Mickey and Co. as a kid - add that to the fact that the Disney cartoons were always harder to find as the Disney Channel was a subscription only thing and not basic cable at the time.
...but I always loved Mickey and the Beanstalk and rented the tape frequently from the library. I'll have to get the DVD!

I always had my Looney Tune fix from Nickelodeon while growing up, but I too didn't have the Disney Channel and always felt something was missing from my childhood, wishing the Disney Cartoons would be shown on television again.. I was a regular video tape renter of Donald and Goofy shenanigans, though. Same shorts over and over again, but enjoyed them every time.
When I finally got the Disney Channel as a kid, pretty much the only thing I watched regularly was the Ink & Paint Club, Mickey's Mouse Tracks, and Donald's Quack Attack, which turned into a full hour of Disney Cartoon goodness. Nowadays not even the Disney Channel has these shorts anymore, focusing more on Tweens than embracing their own legacy. It's sad. They could at least do an early morning block for kids who haven't had the pleasure of seeing these shorts.
