I'm slowly coming to the conclusion that the Rifftrax boys haven't yet caught the full magic of the Live Riff, compared to the gang at CT.
Love 'em both, but so far I think Rifftrax still plays better in the studio. (For one thing, I'm starting to find Kevin a bit, well, hammy in front of a live audience. And I'm not crazy about the three superimposed riffers to one side of the screen -- it distracts me much more than the black-on-black arrangement used for CT Live.)
I'm not trying to start a flame war or anything. But what do you think?

I think you're trying to start a flame war. Well, maybe not. I'll actually be surprised if anyone disagrees with you. Overall I enjoy Rifftrax even more than I do CT, I think, but live it's no contest: CT rules.

I've enjoyed the Rifftrax simulcasts. Thought all three were excellent. Kevin is a bit on the hammy side but I think it works. He also played Servo that way. I've not watched any of their live shows on DVD.
As far as the CT live efforts go I think all their DVDs have been first class. I'll let you know how the actual live show feels after I actually get to attend one this Friday night. ;D

Overall the Titans are more my kind of funny, and I've been finding Rifftrax rather hit and miss of late- that too is not a flamewar thing, it's just how I roll, humor-wise. So I'm not sure if my opinion and preference on the live DVDs is due to my CT leanings or not. Never the less I've enjoyed the Rifftrax live DVDs, I think the live atmosphere adds something - I am glad that Rifftrax offers both, so I can hear the lost riffs when the audience is roaring or if someone messes up. Speaking of messes, the CT crew seem to do that more frequently than the Rifftrax guys, but I think live generally suits them better. I think that was Joel's concept from the start (as indicated in a few interviews), that CT was touring comedy act first and the DVDs were an off shoot from that. Bottom line, I've enjoyed them both - but yeah, CT sparkle in the live format and I'd give them the edge.

I'm starting to find Kevin a bit, well, hammy in front of a live audience. i wouldn't have him any other way. i've said it in the CT thread - i never expected to enjoy the live shows as much as i do. i think i prefer them to studio now, though i've never been to an actual show - i've only seen the dvds. i could never favor CT over RT or vice versa. they both riff movies and they have their own styles. i love them both.

I saw the live simulcast of RT "Reefer Madness" and enjoyed it a lot. Looking forward to "House on Haunted Hill" also. Then CT live in Newark NJ in November.

DVDs are a much better idea I ordered two of the audio only tracks and they never lines up right with the movie...

DVDs are a much better idea I ordered two of the audio only tracks and they never lines up right with the movie... You probably just need more practice. I have all 100+ riffs and they all line up fine for me. I like to see CT live and in the flesh as opposed to the live DVDs they offer. There is way to much audience sounds for my taste on the dvds. It doesn't make me feel like I am there in the crowd at all and I find it quite distracting. It is like a laugh track. Also I prefer the occasional glimpse of the riffers in action the way RiffTrax live does. I really don't need to see people reading scripts for the whole time. Give me more of the movie. When I saw CT live last time, joel was shuffling his script all around for several minutes. It looked like he was doing some light filing.

I have been to the live ct shows (the ones that were close), all 4 of the rifftrax live simulcasts. I own the live ct dvd's. I own the rifftrax christmas live special dvd (but haven't watched it yet). The ct live shows were spot on from the get go- they have quite an energy to them. The Rifftrax live shows have progressed quite well. I think the plan 9 was a bit of a learning curve- after that they cut out alot of the filler material ( the announcer lady, special musical guest) and just kept it to riffing shorts and the feature and some hijinks inbetween. Maybe i just like the rifftrax live shows cause i can go to them cheaper and don't have to travel so far-- but really i like both- just rifftrax live is usually a bit more affordable...though i wish they would do stuff they did not previously release
