I just heard about this on Weekend Edition this morning, but thought it worth posting for those who might not have. It seems that one Georges Brassens is an icon of postwar French music, but not well known in English due to the difficulty of translating his lyrical style. A French-American musician named Pierre De Gaillande has done so, quite well from what I've heard. Here he is playing his album's title track, "Bad Reputation": The NPR piece compared Brassens to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, but my first thought on hearing this one was how easily I could picture They Might Be Giants doing it. The article also links to the full song "Penelope," while De Gaillande's page includes short samples of a number of others.
