My son showed a random interest in seeing the new Tron. I really like the first movie, but it was very context-based for me: pre-internet, early video game culture, early special effects, etc. I was curious, but not enough to actually go pay $30 in the theater (two tickets + popcorn, etc.). But he was stoked, so we went.
My reaction: really cool visuals over a total crap script. And acting…even Jeff Bridges was hard to watch.
So there are two main problems with the story: 1) they suggest that somehow the bad guy is going to make his virtual army all emerge into the real world out of the one little laser down in a video game basement. And that, apart from the kid trying to save his dad, is the main conflict. But it’s just dumb. 2) They got way more specific about things than the first movie, which was much more abstract about how all this stuff worked. And that made the first movie easier to go along with, if not exactly believable.
Now, I know that Tron is always supposed to be light on concept, at least if you ever consider how close to actual technology it could be. It’s just “What if you could go live in a video game?” But the first movie helped you forgot about “real” questions by emphasizing how cool to be in there. This one, though, basically begs you to ask consistency questions since the whole plot revolves around the potentially dangerous relationship between the real world and the video game world. So it breaks its own premise.
It did look damn good, though. But any time they weren't running around or fighting, it was pretty hard to watch.
Plus, no Bit. That's a sin.
