Oh hi, Coleman Francis Mountain.
Don't you love working with wood? Making something simple, yet elegant with one of the world's earliest building materials? No, I didn't get a doctorate in industrial arts in college, but I've been building stuff for quite some time. Whether it's a stage set or furniture, I take every opportunity to craft something I could use or just want to have, out of wood. I love building with the harder stuff (chestnut, walnut, etc.), but my budget usually has me building stuff out of pine.
I'm currently working on a computer case. I've got my mock-up done. Really, this is the most complicated thing I've undertaken (I'm not really all that good at woodworking), since I have to add proper ventilation holes and a functional, safe access panel. I'll definitely post pictures when I'm done, but that's going to be a while coming, as I have to build it piecemeal.
After the computer, I'm probably going to build a bookshelf for my well... books. After something this complex, a bookshelf will be a nice, simple project.
So, how about you guys? Do you enjoy thrusting nails into soft, yielding wood like I do?

It's been over a year since I posted that, but I just wanted to show you guys how it came out. I haven't put any of the fanciful doodads on it, but it's basically done.

It's been a while since I last made anything out of wood, but I still have (among other things) a wooden toolbox I made as a Boy Scout project. My granddad was really good at this sort of thing, and it's mainly because of him that I developed this interest.

I've made dollhouses. No, seriously. I really like them.
I always hit the road block of not enough work space and always wanting all of the supplies before I start. I get marathon about it.
And if it counts, I put up the wainscoting in the bathroom myself. I love wood trim (tee hee).

I'm the most inept craftsman, builder, woodsman, whatever. I once tried to build a "kids castle" in the video store my family owned, to house all the children's movies. I thought it would be "fun" to have a kids area, with a bench and coloring books etc. Fortunately I had my much more talented craftsman cousin helping out.
Once, deciding I needed a door to a second room. I just took the saw and had at it. No measuring, no guide marks, just went all madman on it. My cousin laughed so hard he almost bust a gut when he saw it. "Hey", I offered, "Consider it a German expressionist castle."
He fixed it so it was a proper looking opening.
I could paint it, draw bricks and do the art on the damn thing. But the actual building of it. Heck no. If it had just been me the castle would have been more a kid's 'castle of Dr. Caligari'

Very cool, DQ.
I once made some porch stairs. And a cd case. And a pinewood derby car. And a doorstop.

I can't get the "Why Study Idustrial Arts" short out of my head. Admit it, DQ. You're the "It's fun to have an idea" kid.
Cool stuff. Keep up the good work.

Nice job on the PC box DQ, looks great. I don't think I've ever seen a computer that looked good from the manufacturer. They all come in the cheapest, ugliest plastic known to man. Like some of the others, I'm pretty terrible with wood work outside of carpentry. I once made a case for an NES, but due to lack of any tools, patience or skill, it came out looking like Dr. Frankenstein designed it. This is about the only thing that came out right, and there wasn't all that much woodwork involved (miter saw, some sanding, screws, glue). I got a signed, double sided movie poster for XMas one year, and my brother in law jokingly said I'd have to build a light up frame for it. I couldn't get that idea out of my head, and I finally built the stupid thing. Then, despite the ridiculous cost, I decided it needed a partner. When LED lights get cheaper, I'll be able to make the Bank Job look a lot better, but I like the way they came out. Although, that poster appears to have shifted a little. I might have to crack her open and fix it, but that's a pain so it won't be anytime soon.

The real crafty, detailed stuff is a bit beyond my ken, and I admire those who can do it. I like to get most of my materials together before I start, but it's mostly just me appropriating the proper tools for the job. I really need to get a decent router for the fancier stuff. I'm not good with a wood burner (no patience for it, I suppose), and a router would be perfect for my needs. But I run into the same space problem as you. The patio works when it's sunny out, but not if it's raining, apart from that, it's either I try and work in the cramped laundry room or work out in the living room and just vacuum up everything with the shop-vac afterward. Also, wainscoting looks friggin' amazing. I love the stuff.

The vent slots are too uneven, but that's what you get with hand tools. I tend to overbuild stuff too, so this thing is way heavier than it should be. We're going to see how much heat this bad boy traps. If it's too much, I have a few other designs I'll have to explore. I was looking at LEDs at Radio Shack yesterday, and they're only three bucks and change for a packet of twenty. And you're probably only going to need one or two for your frames (four at the most). There are little button switches too, so it should be a fairly simple and low profile matter of installation.

Nice work DQ! Had to carve a model boat for a project in high school. After a week or so of trying myself, I dug another student's reject out of the trash bin and turned it in as my work. I cannot build a thing other than animosity.

When I made the frames a few years ago, they were much more expensive than the rope lights I went with. Besides the bright and more even light, it would be nice to have something cool in there. The frames get warm enough that I'm hesitant to even turn them on during the summer, which basically lasts 7 months here. Speaking of heat, my PC was running a little hot a few months ago. It turned out to be a dirty fan and an even more filthy heat sink, but I started looking at liquid cooling. I was surprised at how easy they are to install and it's not as expensive as it once was. I don't know what you're considering, but that would probably be my first step.
