They announced it on their site and at Sat News via video. So go there first if you wanna see it that way. forum.rifftrax.com/index.php/topic,20319.0.html For those who want just the facts, ma'am... Inception - Feb 1st Harry Potter & and the Order of the Phoenix - Feb 15 I know I'm in the minority but I was hoping they wouldn't do Inception. For one: I've not been that overjoyed with the Nolan trax and for another, it will take me 5 freaking days to get through it! 3rd, cheesy garbage like Jonah Hex should be done first. Oh well, sounds like the majority are thrilled with the news, and who am I to stand in the way of their happy happy joy joy. Potter is to be expected. They are also offering 2 more shorts discs. ENJOY!

I think we all knew they would do Inception. Doesn't mean it deserved it, but I had a gut feeling they would go for it. In fact, I was surprised it took them this long to do it.

That they took a little while to get to it gave me hope that they'd bypass it. But yeah, I guess your right. It's one of those a lot of people own and that makes it an easier sell (since we don't have to hunt it down). It's one I would have actually skipped if not for my website - which means of course, that it will be a top 10 classic laugh factory.

I haven't heard Memento or the Dark Knight yet. I've got the Dark Knight downloaded, but haven't listened to it yet because I haven't been in the mood. Maybe I just respect the movie too much. Maybe I'm the same with Memento, even though the idea of a Trax on it intrigues me.
On the opposite side of the coin, Harry Potter is something I'm absolute on enjoying both with and without a RiffTrax because I enjoy it more as a movie more than I do as a work of art. But while I hold the story in high regard, I consider a RiffTrax a fun alternative viewing mode. I'm especially interested in Order of the Phoenix, since it was probably the most riffable movie in the series since the Columbus entries.
Though I confess being slightly hesitant about a Half-Blood Price Trax, since it's a movie I find genuinely engrossing, artistic, funny, and touching.

I used to say that you could riff anything and as long as it was funny, that's all that mattered. But what I didn't understand was that when they riff a classic (or a movie I like) you lose that timelessness.
While I've seen some MSTed movies uriffed - when I'm in the mood for an MST3K ep, say Manos or Jack Frost, I don't stop and say, "Hmm, I think I'll watch the unmisted movie instead".
That does happen with Rifftrax and films like Jaws, Casino Royale, Momento, The Dark Knight, Iron Man and especially Casablana. They did a good job on Casablanca, but I probably will never listen to that trax again. When I thumb through my Rifftrax and I come across one of those 'good movies' that I respect. My brain goes, "Hmm, no, I think I'd rather watch the film".
So Inception will likely be a one and done.

That's kind of my problem with RT...the whole point really is to make an unwatchable movie enjoyable, which is why MST3K is so great. Also, it's why I tend to prefer CT or when RT does a movie like "Plan 9" or "Reefer Madness". I just can't get into them doing "Jaws" or "Casablanca", because like you said....what's the point?

I agree with a lot of the points made here when it comes to riffing "good" movies. Particularly with Torgo regarding there being a difference between riffing a good movie and riffing an engrossing one.
For example, "Spiderman," "Jurassic Park," and "Pirates of the Caribbean" are some of my favorite Rifftrax, despite my ability to enjoy these movies on their own. They're fun, easy movies to watch, while not requiring your absolute attention to get the intended effect. An "in one ear, out the other" sort of thing.
On the other hand, enjoyably complex movies like "Memento" and "Dark Knight", in my case (and apparently others' also) require me to pay close attention to what's going on, and that's a big part of why I really enjoy them by themselves. I can't really have it going on in the "background," so to speak, without it bugging me as a result. So watching/enjoying Rifftrax for movies like these is very difficult for me.
I remember trying to help write the fan-written iRiff for "Minority Report," another movie I really enjoy the complexities of, and I just couldn't do it without shutting the movie out of my mind. Something my movie-watching lobe simply refused to do without making my enjoyment level of the whole thing suffer.
So basically it comes down to this based on experience so far:
Enjoyably complex movie = a riff very difficult to enjoy. Anything else = has a pretty good shot.
Though to be fair, I haven't tried watching/making a riff of anything emotionally-wrenching so far, so I'm not sure how I'd react to that yet.
So, yeah, I also really enjoy "Inception," and will probably have to hear some REALLY glowing reviews of the Rifftrax for me to consider it. Glad they're challenging themselves, though - hopefully it'll sell well all the same. I'm also glad to hear about the new Rifftrax Shorts DVD's - they shall be mine soon enough.

Not sure what to expect with Inception, but I look forward to it more than the new Potter. Love the Potter cover though.

Great posters! And I've enjoyed the discussion. I agree with you about riffing good vs engrossing (though I still watch Spider-Man and the like, without the trax) Raja wrote... "Though to be fair, I haven't tried watching/making a riff of anything emotionally-wrenching so far, so I'm not sure how I'd react to that yet."For me, the death scene and the shower scene in Casino Royale were very emotionally-wrenching moving scenes. Hard to laugh when I'm engrossed or choked up. Though I admit, MST3K-wise, I did cry at the end of Monster A-Go Go, but for completely different reasons.

Inception is out but I just realized, these don't work with Blu-ray - at least that's what I've read at the Trax forum when others have asked about synching with Blu.
Damn, I'll have to rent it on DVD.

Where did you read that? They should work just fine with Blu Ray, we've never heard otherwise. In fact, we recorded to the blu ray...

Cool, maybe I misunderstood the conversation, but as recently as Birdemic, someone there mentioned wether the blu-ray would synch up. Maybe they were speaking about re-authoring issues? (I see there's an HD/Blu reauthoring guide there)
In any case thanks for clarifying that. Inception here I come... (even with my reservations about doing this one, I still get as excited as kid at Christmas when there's a new release)

I don't understand why it wouldn't sync up to the Blu-Ray. It's the exact same movie. The only problem I would foresee is that DVDs pause as they switch layers in the middle of the movie, but that shouldn't be that big of a problem.
