Yes you read right, someone is making a sequel to The Killer Shrews! Not only does James Best reprise his role as the sea captain, but it will also star John Schneider. I couldn't stop laughing when I thought of James Best chasing John in the General Lee during the case of the Killer Shrews! LMAO! Info here. roberthood.net/blog/index.php/2011/01/31/return-of-the-killer-shrews/

I think I like James Best enough to... no I don't. But I'd love it if Rifftrax did it.

I hate to say that my reaction to this is just an eyeroll. Haven't we seen this enough?
It just strikes me as yet another lame attempt to cash in on the notoriety that was brought upon the film due to it being shown on MST3k. The originals weren't good films, but at the very least they had integrity, in that the filmmakers were trying to make something worth watching, no matter how badly they failed. These just seem to be made with the attitude that they're bad, but it's okay because the filmmakers are in on the joke, which takes away one of the few things making the original worth watching in the first place. They take earnestness and desire and replace them with ironic detachment.
Plus, and those "proposed" screencaps on the site show another problem. They don't come into the project with the interest in actually making a movie, so they end up making an unsatisfying, uncreative, not-really-a-sequel yet not-really-a-remake-either movie. So the whole thing just becomes a mess.
If the only thing they have to say about the original material is "we're in on the joke", these films really are better left to history.

I think I like James Best enough to... no I don't. I've always thought James Best was a really good character actor. Check out the opening scene of Twilight Zone's "Jess-Belle." ("I love her in a quiet way.") Beautifully played.

He's one of those actors that's just plain likable. He'll always be Roscoe to me, though. Him and Sorrel Booke were awesome together in a completely ridculous, Three Stooges kind of way.

So, they're probably going to do some cheap-looking cartoony CGI for the shrews... meh. They should use dogs for this one too.

The copy they watched on MST had horrible audio quality and they spent most of the time misunderstanding the dialogue. They actually have the entire movie uncut except for the begining narration) on Google Video. I watched it the other day. It actually has much better audio than the MST version and the lines can be clearly made out.

Legend Films released a high quality double feature DVD of GIANT GILA MONSTER / THE KILLER SHREWS for those seeking a pristine copy. They're DVD of LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS is breathtakingly crisp and pristine-looking.
