Damn....we should have done an Oscar Pool. Probably too late to do one now, since the show starts in less than an hour. But we're about 3 hours out from the Best Picture announcement, so post your guesses as to which movie you think WILL win below.
For added fun, vote in the poll above as to which movie you think SHOULD win, and we'll see how the opinions of the board match up to the Academy's judgment.
This year was a better year for nominees than usual, and it's hard for me to pick a favorite. The only two I haven't seen yet are WINTER'S BONE and THE KING'S SPEECH, and even though SPEECH seems to have gained momentum lately, I think THE SOCIAL NETWORK will still end up winning tonight. That would also be my personal pick, which means I'll probably be wrong.
All the other movies were also quite good, although I was less bowled over by THE FIGHTER, INCEPTION and 126 HOURS than most. They'd be at the bottom of my list. They were fine, but I'll never watch them again. I loved BLACK SWAN, TRUE GRIT, and THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT. TOY STORY 3 was pretty good, for an animated movie (usually a tough sell for me). But I thought THE SOCIAL NETWORK got everything just right.

If "That Guy from Harlem" doesn't win then I'm pulling for the only one I've seen... "True Grit."

I have kids. I saw Toy Story 3. That's about it. Oh, and Tron: Legacy. But that one (rightly) has nothing to do with recognition for good film-making.
Edit: Just saw that Natalie Portman won Best Actress. Where the hell was that talent in Star Wars? I mean, I know it wasn't all her fault, but still...I guess she saved her career, though.
Skip to about 1:30 to see the kind of cringe-worthy performance that she needed to overcome...

Portman was the one of the few winners I picked correctly tonight. I agree she was awful in SW, but that was probably as much the fault of the film/director than hers. She really was amazing in Black Swan.

I have to wonder why they're even going to bother to keep the Best Animated category if they're going to continue to put the latest Pixar movie in the Best Picture nom list. It's great that Pixar is getting recognition, but it's kind of kills the suspense of the other category. Gee...I wonder which is going to win...this one...or the one that also happens to be up for Best Picture.

I would agree, Torgo, although remember CARS did lose out to HAPPY FEET a few years ago.

Was I the only one who thought James Franco and Anne Hathaway bombed big time as Oscar hosts?

actaully i thought she did a decent job. much better than say "Garry Shandling" which i saw him host an awards so a couple years back. i can't remember IF it was the oscars or the emmy's to be honest. but he was TERRIBLE! i think that "Anne Hathway" did a decent job.
& though James Franco is a good actor. he did an ok job, he did seem to stiff though, the jokes no matter who hosts seem just to damn cheesy. & honestly this year it did seem like people
who actually don't normally win actually won for a change! normally we see the same people pretty much win each & every year. & it just gets tiring. i will say this, normally at some point the oscars get get pretty boring, & tonite it actually flew by for me. so that's a good change.

What kinda made me laugh was how James Franco wanted to harp on "Oh, Ricky Gervais bombed as Golden Globes host, me and Anne are gonna be light years ahead of him in terms of comedy!"
.....Uh.....sure James......sure.....

I would agree, Torgo, although remember CARS did lose out to HAPPY FEET a few years ago. And Monsters Inc lost to Shrek. But my issue is not with Pixar winning all the time, it's that for the last two years Up and Toy Story 3 were nominated for both Best Picture and Best Animated Picture. Neither Cars nor Monsters Inc were nominated for Best Picture. I can't help but wonder why the latter is being continued if the one that is nominated for Best Picture is obviously going to win. Oh well. At least I know Cars 2 won't be nominated for Best Picture. Animated maybe, but I don't think they'll push it up that far.

The Best Animated Feature subject is one of my big pet peeves with the industry. Honestly, I feel like the creation of that category was kind of a condescending, veiled slap in the face to animation, and I think it sums up the Academy's general view of animation. It basically says, "You did a great job (given your limitations)". If an animated movie's good enough to be considered for Best Picture (which I agree for Up and Toy Story 3), then nominate it*. Don't dump everything down to an almost-as-good award category, doing so is just kind of insulting, and creates the Best Picture/Best Animated Picture problem you guys are discussing.
*Not that I think the Academy is likely to actually let one win anyway.

They most likely wouldn't. The Academy has a bias against most non drama/art films. When one gets nominated, you know it's not going to win (exception being Return of the King, but they were just kissing Lord of the Rings ass all night that day).
I remember seeing an interview with Richard Roeper once where he said he'd like the Academy to separate genres, kind of like the Golden Globes do. Have nods to comedy, drama, sci-fi/fantasy, and animation. I kind of like that idea better than what they're doing now.

I just don't get the Oscars. I understand why they exist for the industry, a big party and a good old circle jerk is always fun. I just don't know how they managed to convince the average film viewer to care.
Maybe I'm just jaded, but I can't see why it matters to an outsider. I remember my freshman year of high school, my film teacher used to talk about these books called Alternate Oscars, or something like that. They'd say what/who won, talk about the contenders, and then say who they felt should have won. I think it was then that I stopped caring about awards shows.
I guess what I'm saying can be boiled down to this...
Roger Corman was recently awarded an honorary Oscar. Roger Corman.
