So Wal-Mart was selling the first two seasons of I Love Lucy for 13 bucks each. 66 episodes for $26? A show I used to watch religously? I couldn't resist myself.
Some shows I've got tired of through syndication, like Seinfeld or Happy Days. I have skipped DVD releases of each because I've seen every episode 12 times and probably could spend the rest of my life just catching the occasional episode here and there. I used to think I Love Lucy fell into this group until I popped disc 1 in, and started laughing like crazy. I still adore this show. And Lucille Ball is still one of my favorite comedy icons.
The DVDs came with with episodes of the radio that inspired the series, My Favorite Husband, which I am enjoying just as much. The DVDs are worth getting just for these features alone.
So, who else loves Lucy? I'd start a poll to see which series was the favorite, but I think we all know I Love Lucy would run away with it. The show was a syndicated powerhouse for half a century for a reason. But feel free to express your feelings on My Favorite Husband, The Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour (technically I Love Lucy in a different format), The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy, and Life With Lucy as well.
The latter two I haven't seen. Would anybody reccomend them? As stated above, I think My Favorite Husband is a lot of fun. I'd buy the rest of the Lucy sets just for them alone. I haven't seen the Lucy/Desi Comedy Hour since it was on TV Land, but I remember it being merely decent. I don't think the I Love Lucy format was well supported in an hour, and it spent too much time catering to guest stars instead of actual comedy. I haven't seen the Lucy Show in years, but I remember liking it. Don't think I'll be buying it on DVD though.
