So, I was wondering through Barnes & Noble the other day looking for some classic adventure fiction for a time killer (specifically HG Wells or Jules Verne) and I came across a copy of Arthur Conan Doyle's The Lost World. It suddenly occurred to me that I had never read it. I have seen every film adaptation of it (my favorites being the 20's silent film and the camp classic TV series starring Jennifer O'Dell's bikini), yet I had never took the time to give the original tale a go. Kind of appalled at myself, I immediately purchased it.
As I read it, I find myself very familiar with it. I've already adventured with Roxton, Malone, Summerlee, and Challenger (god, I love Challenger) many a time, making them seem like old friends. It got me remembering those times, specifically the first time I found myself subjected to the tale...which was unfortunately this...
I had originally seen these movies around the mid-90's, back when Jurassic Park was huge. These movies were sitting on the video rental shelf around the time the sequel came out, ready to confuse anybody who walked past them thinking the latest JP was out. Especially a 12 year old boy. I rented them and watched them. Obviously it wasn't Jurassic Park. Obviously it wasn't even a suitable replacement. Mind you, this was a time before I discovered Mystery Science Theater 3000. I did not know the value of a riff at that point. If I did, I probably wouldn't have watched them in a stunned silence. But now, I'm watching them again, and they're absolutely hilarious.
These are two productions shot back-to-back in Canada back in 1992, and they star John Rhys-Davies (Raiders of the Lost Ark, Lord of the Rings), David Warner (Tron, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze), and Eric McCormack (Will & Grace). The sad thing is, these cast members in a better production would have been quite good in these roles. Especially Rhys-Davies, who was arguably born to play Challenger. It's kind of frustrating to see him dragged down by such a juvenile production. And yet, he has such great chemistry with Warner as Summerlee, making it almost worth watching for the two of them bickering alone.
These are the two movies I always regret MST3K never did. It's doubtful that RiffTrax or Cinematic Titanic would even look at them either. I can dream though. If I were to ever do an IRiff, I imagine it would be for these two movies, which have been posted on YouTube in their entirety.
Anybody who wants to watch, enjoy! I hope you get a laugh and a riff or two out of it. I know I did revisiting it.
Warning: While (if I remember correctly) both films were rated PG, the second film contains nudity of the female posterior variety. The young boys can thank me later. Everyone else, you've been warned.
