Of course, if "Blame Canada" won, we wouldn't have had Matt & Trey making fun of Phil Collins, so I guess there's some good to it.
But yeah, it really should've won over whatever that Collins song was.
Really, the fact that the academy has created a "Best Animated" award is a rather glaring symbol of its closed-mindedness. Yeah, a lot of animated movies are for kids, but thanks in no small part to the American film industry perpetuating that. The fact that an animated film cannot win the "Best Picture" award is, I think, an indication of the limitations of The Academy. Granted, I didn't want Shrek to win Best Picture or anything, but still, animated films require just as much (if not more) hard work as a regular movie. Just a lack of respect for the craft of one individual over another bugs me.

I can't join you on Blame Canada as I thought "Save Me" from Aimee Mann should have won that year. Canada was cute, but Save Me was brilliant.
As for animation, at least it gives those movies some love. In the past they were largely ignored. With this system a movie like the Secret of Kells or the Triplets of Belleville earns some much deserved notice come Oscar time. It might not be complete respect, but it's better than no respect at all.

I can't join you on Blame Canada as I thought "Save Me" from Aimee Mann should have won that year. Canada was cute, but Save Me was brilliant. couldn't agree more. magnolia's a life-changer. i love that movie, and that is a real pivot point in that movie, the save me digression. As for animation, at least it gives those movies some love. In the past they were largely ignored. With this system a movie like the Secret of Kells or the Triplets of Belleville earns some much deserved notice come Oscar time. It might not be complete respect, but it's better than no respect at all. i feel like there was a point when folks were making an effort to expand the role of animation from its traditional children's-movie mode, with movies like wizards, heavy metal, fritz the cat, watership down, fantastic planet (which is probably the most stonertastic movie i've ever seen), allegro non troppo, etc., etc., etc. a lot of those flicks were really subversive and wonderful! though i wouldn't say there was a best picture candidate among them, it was kinda moving in that direction. They, with a capital T, seem to have reclaimed animation as a strictly children's entertainment, which is a bit sad. the transition from cel to CGI seems to have had something to do with that. the creation of the best-animated-movie category may have, as well, but offhand i can't remember when they started doing that. i think it was fairly recently. anyway, as the US has moved away from mature-oriented animation, japan has rushed in to fill the void. with decidedly mixed results.

My main problem with "Blame Canada" is that it isn't even the best song from that movie.
Agree about "Save Me", though. As much as I enjoyed "South Park", those were essentially novelty songs whereas "Save Me" was a poignant song utilized masterfully in Magnolia.

The King's Speech. I personally believe The Fighter or The Social Network should have won for best picture.

The King's Speech. I personally believe The Fighter or The Social Network should have won for best picture. King's Speech was okay. . .I'd say on a similar level as Fighter. Neither were better than Social Network, though. (uh-oh...I think TPMJ may take issue with that....) I thought True Grit was a better movie than Speech and Fighter, too.

Here here! Both Fighter and Speech had great performances in pretty good films. True Grit and Network had great performances in excellent films (in my opinion). TPMJ seemed to not like that the lead in Network because he was an a/shole, but to me that was the point of the performance.

Oh I get the point - still didn't like a thing about the movie. Top to bottom, direction, acting, script... you name it.

So while we are on the subject, would you call the screen writing award given to Sorkin an Academy blunder?

Though there are exceptions, I've never been a been that fond of Sorkin's work. That includes West Wing and that sacred cow, Sports Night. I feel there's a lot of forced drama in his work. I feel manipulated... I know they are all manipulating me, but I don't like to feel like I'm being pushed in the back. A writer/director has got to draw me in naturally, get me to buy into their story so that I go in willingly. If I feel like your trying to twist my arm, you lose me.

When it comes to communication, I am socially clumsy. Sometimes I think I'm being funny or making sense, then I come back, re-read what I wrote and realize I came off sounding like a wing nut, or worse, a dickweed. That's why you see a lot of "Last edits" in my posts (for that and the typos). So DQ, long story long, he was referring to something I edited out that I thought was cute, but really wasn't. Jesus, now I'm sounding like those long winded prank explaining people in Track of the Moon Beast! *sigh* and of course....
