FINALLY going to catch one of these with some friends. Got my tickets yesterday. Somehow the theater 15 minutes away is playing this, probably because it's in a college town. Looking forward to it!

I'm taking the next day off to recover. Too old to drive 3+ hours each way then work the next day. Just too old...

Opened up the local Inlander to see an article about the Rifftrax show, with interview with Mike -- www.inlander.com/spokane/article-16845-movie-slayers.htmlI love what he had to say about people who defend the crappy movies. That cracked me up. Though Mike says he "gets it" - I personally don't understand the criticisms mentioned in the article and elsewhere. A comic can tackle about any subject, tease pretty much anything these days... but for Christ sake, don't dare make fun of a movie? Oh well, what can you do with people who don't like fun. Me, I like fun and am looking forward to the show.

Can't wait for this. Will be going with a group so it will be even more fun. The last two were some of the most fun I've ever had.

Ugh...well, I'm down to the wire. If the paycheck shows up tomorrow morning, I can buy a ticket for tomorrow night. If not, then I'll have to catch it as an encore or a DVD release. Opened up the local Inlander to see an article about the Rifftrax show, with interview with Mike -- www.inlander.com/spokane/article-16845-movie-slayers.htmlI love what he had to say about people who defend the crappy movies. Me, I like fun and am looking forward to the show. I think it's kind of an offshoot of the "say what you like, but don't hurt anyone's feelings" mentality, for all the good and bad that the sentiment brings. It's true that a lot of people put effort into movies when they're made, and in the end those movies are just bad, so I can understand people being a bit defensive about that. Since Hollywood has a history of churning out horrible movies no matter what people say, however, that's always why I've found MST3K and Rifftrax so refreshing since the guys watching the movies really aren't taking anything lying down.

Just got back - AWESOME. I'm sure watching it with good friends and a receptive crowd helped, but I haven't laughed so hard at anything in ages. Solid throughout, with great callbacks to the short ("What is Nothing?") and the two cute and hilarious animated stories. Most fun I've had with any of the Rifftrax releases.

seize the bone!
sartre says to imagine nothingness, you should imagine an empty black field in front of you, then, once you have it imagined, turn your head suddenly to the side... and THAT is nothingness. as puzzling and dreary as that notion is, it's got nothing on that bizarroland "what is nothing" short.
fun show! i can't wait to get the DVD.

Just got back...had a really great time watching it with friends. Loved the weird short, and also liked how the referenced the short and other Live shows later in the movie. The animated shorts had me laughing so hard I wet em.

Hilarious! Second only to the Christmas show, I'd say.
Personally, I think Jack the Giant Killer is a fun movie on it's own... at least I'm a fan of the movies it blatantly rips off:
7th Voyage of Sinbad = Overall visual aesthetic (and lead actor) stolen. Look of the giants apes the design of the cyclops from this film. The giant vs. serpent fight a blatant copy of the cyclops vs. dragon fight from Sinbad. Leprechaun serves same narrative function as the genii in Sinbad. Sleeping Beauty = Look of the bewitched princess aping Maleficent's design. Pendragon turns into a dragon in the same way Maleficent does. Wizard of Oz = Hourglass scene where the villain gives the hero an ultimatum. Pendragon's witches similar to Wicked Witch's flying monkeys. The Thief of Baghdad = Sigurd and the boy being turned into a dog and a chimp similar to Sabu being turned into a dog in this film. In both they briefly serve as animal sidekicks until regaining their true form.
am I forgetting anything?
I though the design of Pendragon's witches were actually pretty cool.

I really enjoyed my time at this. I think I place this behind House on Haunted Hill and Plan 9 (my two favorite so far) but it was fun. The movie was goofy, but it was playfully so, and the riffing was a wonderful supplement.
Sadly, I didn't get to see the short. I was running late, and so only dashed into the theater just as the music box was being given to the princess in the beginning. Even half an hour late (I estimate) as I was, though, a very fun night at the movies. :-)

I hate to nay say but I didn't like this one as much as I did Reefer Madness or Haunted Hill. Both of those had more shorts and, in my (and basically my theater's) opinion, the first 15-20 minutes of Jack fell really flat. So flat I got a sinking feeling about the remainder. But as per usual, the guys soon hit their stride and after that it was smooth sailing. I had a great time, but it was easily the weakest of the three live shows I've attended.
Anyone else experience this rough start up to the movie?

It wasn't rough for me, I enjoyed it. However, I do agree that this movie ranks 3rd place (actually, it ties for 3rd place, along with Reefer Madness. Plan 9 and Haunted Hill are above it, and the Christmas Shorts show, as much as I loved it, comes in last.) I think we're starting to get to the point where we've got enough "episodes" that Phantom's Law is going to begin to apply. ...it is Phantom's Law, right? I'm always worried I'll get the name of the term wrong. -EDIT- I was wrong on both counts. I double checked the term in the Book Of Lore, and saw that it was actually "The Phantom Rule." And then I saw that the rule didn't say what I remembered it saying (something about one MSTie's horrible episode being another MSTie's favorite or something...we had another Law for that I thought, but I can't remember it now. Grrrrr.) -ANOTHER EDIT- Although, the fact that I got the name and definition of The Phantom Rule wrong doesn't mean that the rule doesn't still apply.

Just got home at 1am. Do I win the long distance award again? Was it worth it and will I do it next time? Damn straight!
