Sucks that I can't get a blu ray for the version I prefer - guess I'll be saving my $

I just got out of Awakening, and while it's a little too breezy, I had a good time. Selene is more badass than she's ever been (she flipped a goddamn van over with her bare hands!?!), and the diection is satisfyingly stylish. The ending sets up a fifth film, and while the idea of adding humans to the mix is spicy, I profess somewhat of a concern as to where it's going. And that direction mostly involves Michael' Michael is in the film, but it's not Speedman. They found a giy that vaguely resembles him and gave him no lines. For a while they wanted us to believe a petty gunshot wound to the shoulder killed him, I cried bullsh*t from the start (given the way he healed himself back to life in Evolution), but in the end it turns out he's still alive and Selene begins searching for him.
What bothers me is that while I accepted the body double in this movie because the role was miniscule, if they intend on bringing Michael back it's doubtful that Speedman will reprise the role. I hope they don't continue this whole "Where's Waldo" game with him. Just recast him and be done with it. Don't screw with us. Overall original is still the best, I liked it better than Evolution, but not as much as Rise of the Lycans. Don't ask me about the 3D because I wasn't able to make a 3D showing, but it looked like it should have been spectacular.

The 4th installment in the series was great fun. I wasn’t sure at the start, I thought it might be a little too busy and nothing but explosions. But once it settled into some semblance of story and got into the mythology, it sunk its teeth into me (and it had that adrenaline pumping action to boot)
Kate Beckinsale is as gorgeous as ever –even while wearing a scowl that would do Clint Eastwood proud- and fit into that tight fitting costume nicely. She looked incredible in 3D on that IMAX screen (I’m all a twitterpated). Overall 3D was decent. Though not up to Avatar or Hugo levels.
I liked the addition of the daughter, like the way the eyes change when they vamp it up; I like the battle with the giant werewolf. Critics be damned... I just flat out liked it!
While it’s tough to know how it’ll hold up (I really enjoyed Evolution when I watched it again last summer) I think right now, Awakening has the slight edge over it. With the first a clear #1 and the third –an unnecessary prequel- the only one I flat out disliked in this series.

I really disliked the first two but I loved the third. From what I've heard so far though, I think I'll wait till it comes out on netflix.

Looks like Awakening has good legs - and I'm not talking about Beckinsale (those would be great legs) - and has already passed Rise of the Lycans, and is set to beat the original this weekend. Could match or even surpass Evolution as the highest grossing film in the franchise.
Looks like a fifth is a sure thing.

Awakening hit Blu and DVD today. Since I missed out on a 3D presentation in theaters, I picked up the 3D version. I won't be able to get to it until much later tonight, though.
The back of the disc says we've got a commentary, blooper reel, music video, 5 featurettes, and previsualization sequences (which is being boasted as 3D exclusive, so those who go for regular won't get it. Looks like I got a busy night ahead of me!

Dug into my disc, and am pleased with it. The 3D tranfer is pretty good. I've seen better, but it's one of the better tranfers I own. I was worried the darkness would kill the depth, much like Resident Evil: Afterlife, but it was only a minor issue. Was disappointed the format doesn't really kick in until about 5 minutes in do to flashbacks to the previous films and news footage. In a movie as short as this, less footage for the cash you fork over isn't really fun to think about. However there are 3D previews for Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence, Men in Black III, Amazing Spider-Man, and Resident Evil: Retribution that look spectacular (MIB3's 3D in particular is incredible. If it looks that good on TV, I can't wait to see it on the big screen).
Featurettes were surprisingly juicy. I expected them to be brief and passive, but they're actually pretty in depth (I was surprised to learn Patrick Tatopolous didn't do creature effects in this film. I didn't notice the difference). There's a lot of Beckinsale ass kissing, but it's a great ass and I don't blame them.
The music video is sh*t. Bland moaning and screeching. Couldn't tell you what the f*** it was supposed to be about if I tried. But there's an Evanescence song during the end credits, so all is well.
Pre-viz is nothing much. Don't feel bad that you missed out on them if you picked up the regular disc. Haven't listened to the commentary yet. But a solid transfer and good featurettes make this a disc well worth having.

Picked it up today. Boy, you take out the 10 minute end credits and this is a short film.
Enjoyed the featurettes. I like learning about the ins and outs and challenges with the 3D -- how many frames per second they use to get a shot, what new tools they tried out. I guess this was the first film to use the RED EPIC digital cameras in 3D.
Also interesting was the set design - Werewolf architecture was modern, using squares and rectangles, while the Vampire coven employed circles and arches and was very old and crumbling.
Going to try the commentaries next. Hope they speak about how the 2 director thing works -- who did what and where.
Anything concrete yet on a 5th film?

No word yet. But it's the highest grossing film of the franchise, not to mention its foreign gross was twice what the previous films earned. I have very little doubt that one will be made, that is if Kate doesn't say no. But she's sleeping with the series creator, so if she was sweet talked into the fourth film, she'll be sweet talked into a fifth.
Most logical guess would be January 2015, following the three year tradition of the last few films. But Screen Gems might push it into production sooner like the new Resident Evil, so 2014 could be likely.

I am glad that Mrs Slappy and I weren't the only ones to notice this. Take out the credits and the movie is literally less than 80 minutes long....WTF?
