819 - Invasion of the Neptune Men
This one gets some negative reviews, but as for me, I love it! The part with the eyelash mites is great, and I think the host segs are the funniest of the Roman episodes. Bobo especially is hilarious......."C'mon everyone, let's go watch me eat." Yes, the movie is way out there in awfulness but the riffing is top notch...."Go to Germany and play." And of course there's the memorable visit by Krankor. The sudden outpouring of love for Krankor always slays me. These guys were brilliant and so is this episode.

The Atomic Brain - Remember when the British woman wakes up and screams, My eyes, my eyes!! The line seemed so reminiscent of Estelle Parsons (Blanche Barrow) in Bonnie and Clyde after the travel court shootout - just seemed like a missed riff opportunity.
And a perfect riff would have been something like, Don't die Daddy, don't die!! It would have been a classic.

Mole People. Love these Universal films in year 8. They're lit well and I can hear the dialog and the music is fine and they even have plots with rising action! Good riffing--can't get enough of the "down, down" professor. I think the riff "this turns out to be the correct theory" is a golden one, possibly top 100 (had I not lost that list in a computer crash I'd know if I had put it there). Ropes and asses.

The Thing That Couldn't Die. Another film I'm fond of, perhaps because it's not the same-old. No giant mutated critter or invader from outer space, no evil scientists or hoppin; teens, but this: an original setting, a guest ranch, a boobsical damsel in distress that has at least one talent, the odd dousing/finding combo, and the antagonist of a telepathic historical severed head, which you have to admit, is not present in every other movie you've seen. Good riffing, fun introduction of the Brain Guys in host segments. (Amoeba this!) Grade: A

The Undead and Terror from the Year 5000. Much worse movies on their own, but still good riffing makes for good enough episodes. I still laugh when the Brain Guys give Pearl that huge double-headed axe to fight with and Bobo gets a sea snail. And at one point he seems to lose it and calls out "my sea snail!" as if it matters. That''s solid comedy writing. I also realized I like the way the scene is lit--so kudos to whoever made those lighting decisions.

Riding with Death. I skipped forward to this because I wanted something more cheerful. I still don't get what Robert Denby was doing there at the end. He blew up his own race car because... he wanted to destroy a bad pop singer? Before the bad pop singer was in it, he still had that plan, but what was the plan? Was he anti-NASCAR? I sympathize, but it seems like a lot of trouble to go through over that feeling.

Someone explained it once, and I seem to recall it sort of made sense, but really I can't figure it out and I don't recall what their explanation was. I'm not sure that killing Jim Stafford was completely justified by his music and acting talents.

Regarding the confusing plot of RIDING WITH DEATH, I assume that's because the Brains made a lot of cuts to the second half of the movie.
If you take into account that a one-hour TV show in the 60s and 70s ran about 50 minutes, and that RWD is comprised of two such episodes, then you've got a 100-minute film on your hands. All episodes of MST3K after season 3 are 92 minutes, and the host segments take up probably 15 minutes of the show altogether. That leaves you with a movie that's about 75 minutes long, so you're missing a fourth of the movie (and in the case of RWD, half an "episode" of said movie).
So what I'm saying is that to edit a movie as long as RIDING WITH DEATH to fit the format of MST3K, a lot of story is going to be cut. Now, as to what that story was, I can't help you, because I've never seen the full film.
And before I press the "Post Reply" button, I think I should point out that since I haven't seen the actual film, it's entirely possible that RIDING WITH DEATH is just as confusing at 100 minutes as it is at 75 minutes in length.

I was thinking more of the character Jim Stafford played than the actual singer, who I actually payed real money to see back when; he was on the bill with...someone I wanted to see, I forget, but maybe Jim Croce and he was not great but not awful--certainly I wasn't saying "kill him!" I meant as portrayed, that character's music did stink and I may have encouraged action taken against him. And probably someone has explained the plot to me before, but it didn't take, and I can't work it out logically now. You have this stuff, and this radio signal to set it off and you already know that it works, but why the car? Why is it in there in the first place? What happened in South Berlin? If you're testing a new version of it, why not blow someone else's car up instead, a ratty old Beetle or the like? Your own very expensive race car--I can't imagine how that would make sense, but...whatever. I really do spend too much time trying to make sense of nonsensical bad movies.

I always assumed that the car was the means by which they used to smuggle the explosives back from Berlin. They were going to blow it up because they had the opportunity to take out the race officials, and the Intersect team who'd be gathered around the car post-race for the inspection.

My little sidenote: I saw Jim Stafford a few years ago with my parents and brother in Branson, Missouri. I assume he's still there, but he had a theater and performed a show every night. He even had his kids performing in it. He was pretty funny actually.

With my computer down for now, all my writing projects are trapped inside. So with an abundance of free time I decided to put my MST DVDs to good use. It's been a while since my last MST marathon, so I decided to make my way chronologically through the DVD sets. Why just the released eps? I don't have every episode of the show (I know, some administrator I turned out to be) and a good deal of the non retail episodes I own ar on my computer (d'oh!). Except for season 5, 8 and 10. I have every episode of those somewhere.
Anywho, I've been watching:
The Crawling Eye Robot vs. the Aztec Mummy Mad Monster
I actually really enjoy these first three episodes. The riffing is casual, but they're great episodes to relax to. Out of the three, my fav is easily the Crawling Eye, that's because I dig the movie a bit. And the monster kicks booty.

Looks like I'm only getting through two today. Skipping over Women of the Prehistoric, which I consider the season finale (because that's what it's supposed to be) I watched the Corpse Vanishes and the Crawling Hand. Not as enjoyable as the previous three, but have their moments. Crawling Hand gets the advantage because of the much more watchable movie.
Also, the theater seat tints get really funky. Especially in Corpse, where it sonstantly switches from green to grey depending on the picture. What an eyesoar!
