Today I leave for a nerd convention, GenCon in Indianapolis. I expect a lot of games will be played, be they video, card, tabletop or board.
And we'll also see our old GM and MAKE HIM FINISH THOSE STUPID CLIFFHANGER STORIES THAT HE LEFT US ON RIGHT BEFORE HE MOVED TO INDIANAPOLIS.
All in all, I expect to have a good time.

I went to GenCon in...1994? Great time, back when I played a lot of Games Workshop stuff.

Mummi was what inspired the spoof game "Pyst".

I made a mistake, though. It wasn't GenCon. It was Origins. We had plans to go to a GenCon once, but they fell apart.

GenCon was awesome. I played 1st edition D&D (or "Advanced D&D" if you prefer, since it's not really original) for the first time at an event called "The Tower of Gygax." With my previous knowledge of 3.5th edition, it was still very easy to play (as opposed to 4th edition which is a different game entirely. Not that I want to join the 4e bashers, but it's not really comparable.)
I also had a demo of an RP game called Cosmic Patrol, based on those old cheesey 1940s and 50s sci-fi serials and pulp stories. It's the best system for reimagining Commando Cody and the Radar Men from the Moon. It's also a great tool for teaching Improv exercises, so if I ever go back to my old Improv troupes, I need to take that along as a teaching exercise, since the game's less about fighting monsters and more about telling awesome stories.
I also played Zombie Dice for the first time (from Steve Jackson Games, the makers of Munchkin.) Zombie Dice was a wonderful combination of easiness. Easy to learn, easy to set up, easy to play. I made a point to buy it.
Finally, on the last day of the convention, I played a board game called The Adventurers: The Pyramid of Horus. It was, by far, the most fun I've had with a regular board game in years. I would have bought it right then and there, but it cost thirty bucks, I was running low on funds, and really wanted to make sure I had the gas money to get home. As such, I think that I'll be buying it when it "officially" goes on sale in a few months.
