Looks great, wish that blowhard Kalat wasn't doing commentary, but maybe since this is a universally hailed movie he wont have to use the commentary as a bully pulpit.
Looking forward to seeing how the print looks.

The transfer is the number one reason I'll be looking into this as well. Classic Media's disc is good, but the print is shoddy. A Criterion restoration on Blu? Yes please!
I'm a tad disappointed that Criterion wasn't able to obtain the "colorized" Italian cut to go with this. Sure, it's abysmal, but it would have made the fan curiosity must buy of the century.

I wouldn't normally buy a second copy of a movie I already have (unless it's replacing a VHS with a DVD), but I might have to make an exception for this.
And I've seen the Italian version. Abysmal? Try excruciating.

I'm still amazed this is happening.
I think we were all expecting a somber, "classy" image for the cover, and instead Criterion goes with one of the most badass images of Godzilla I've seen. They must really want me to love them!

Criterion's disc hits shelves on Tuesday. Mine's already in the mail!
I can't wait. The video and adio is getting stellar reviews all over the net and I just bought a new 42" TV to watch this sucker in its full glory.

Buy. This. Disc.
The picture looks great. About as good as it can look. The interviews are fascinating, the Lucky Dragon featurette was appropriately haunting, and while Kalat is his predictable fast talking self, the commentary tracks are fairly informative (though his silly rant about pronunciation of Gojira vs. Godzilla made me grind my teeth and think "Shut up...shut up..."). However, I'll keep my Classic Media discs for their features as well, which are appropriately different enough. Plus the commentaries are much better there.
Bang up job Criterion. Now I'll campaign for a Criterion release of King Kong vs. Godzilla (which desperately need a subtitled release and Universal just isn't interested).

Got my copy. Won't really have the time to dive into it, but I skimmed through the release and everything looks excellent.
Random detail that delighted me: the opening "Transworld Pictures" logo from Godzilla, King of the Monsters! I have never seen that before! And the ending credits are in the proper place (in Classic Media's release they were just grafted on after the "The End" card).

And the ending credits are in the proper place (in Classic Media's release they were just grafted on after the "The End" card). I was surprised that they included the original Japanese Toho logo before the Transworld logo. I doubt that it was originally like that, but I've been wrong before. I didn't care as much for Kalat's commentary. There was so good information in there, but I think the commentary for the Classic Media release was better. I need to watch it again to make a picture comparison. The only parts that I really noticed were scenes where Godzilla sticks his head over the mountain (in this print you can find where the two matted images meet) and the scene where Godzilla makes his first attack on the harbor. That scene always seems darker in the Japanese version, even on this print. The feature that showed you the different matte shots and how they were created was very interesting. Turns out there was about twice as much matte imagery in the movie than I originally thought.
