Family showed up tonight to help cut up and remove a formerly beautiful Bradford Pear tree. Wind blew one way... half broke off. Wind blew the other way... goodbye other half.

I am still out of power as of now. Posting from my phone.
There are still lines down on my road and several trees over the lines that they're not fixing.

I've got a friend who said she made coffee on her grill before heading into work.
Sorry non-power folks. Sucks.

Its been a mess here since the storm. Lots of misery. I am so lucky that I was able to avoid most of it. Other than my usual misery.

Well sky, I wish I were around to be able to prepare you for what you were in for. So far I survived through two CAT 2's and 2 CAT 3's (not counting Andrew because I was too young to remember it)
We have Hurricane parties to get us through it. At the store, you see just as much beer being sold as gasoline and ice.
A few tips for others in case they have the unfortunate experience to have to go through a Hurricane. Get CASH, because after the storm, most place's credit card machines won't be working, and the ATMs will be down. As hot as it gets, DO NOT OPEN THE WINDOWS DURING THE STORM. That will cause a unbalance in the pressure and greatly increase the chances of loosing your roof. Mow your grass before the storm. The last thing you want is to be cleaning your yard after the storm and find a hidden snake or live power line hidden in the long grass. Also it helps in having less mosquitoes after the storm.
Finally, I like to get some water that you don't plan drinking, set it aside in a bucket or something similar. This will come in handy if the water is shut off and you want to use the toilet. You use the old water to flush the toilet manually. For Hurricane Lili in 2002, our ditch was over flowing , we collected some of the water and ended up having to use it to flush our toilets for about 12 hours.
Also, when the power goes out, DO NOT OPEN THE FREEZER!!! If you leave the freezer shut, the food will survive for another 24 hours. There is always a chance your power could be restored before then.
We only got a Tropical Storm this year, and after it was over, my parish was still considered in a drought. The worst part is that was week later we are over run with Mosquitoes.

Really good tips, dph. Some of them we've been doing. I like your mention of mowing the grass. That's one I learned years ago. Bad enough cleaning up the yard. Even worse when it's overgrown. This 'cane was no more than a Cat 1. I can't imagine our damages had it been a 2 or 3.
