I think trailer teasers are a waste of time. That being said, I've watched these 30 times each.

Since we're finally getting a trailer for Godzilla vs. Kong tomorrow, which will likely be the only one for the film since we have a crunch time release date now, I thought I'd make a little collage of MonsterVerse trailers that lead us here. Kind of fun to go back and look at the ads for these movies. Godzilla(Comic Con Teaser) (Teaser) (Trailer) Kong: Skull Island(Comic Con Trailer) (Final Trailer) Godzilla: King of the Monsters(Teaser) (Trailer) With the release date rapidly approaching, here's a small list of things we know about the mostly mysterious movie: * The movie was completed last year. A lot of movies that were delayed by Covid completed post ages ago and are just sitting on a shelf. Godzilla vs. Kong is no different. Godzilla: King of the Monsters was also completed a full seven months before release, but it didn't have a pandemic to blame for it. Just a studio that kept pushing it. * The title bout between beasts reportedly has a decisive winner, unlike it's 1962 counterpart which ended with both beasts falling into the ocean. Since Kong is seen swimming away and Godzilla is not visible, he is often named the winner of that film. * No matter who wins that battle, one thing we know for certain is that a third act twist comes into play. Toys have already revealed Mechagodzilla is in this movie, and it's already been leaked that the two titans battle the massive mech in the climax, possibly similar to how Batman and Superman teamed up to battle Doomsday at the end of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. Mechagodzilla's full role in the film is a mystery though. * A new kaiju featured in the film is a snake/bat hybrid named Nozuki. It's likely a Skull Island native. * Toys have shown off some gear for both titans. Kong sports a battle-ax club which is supposedly made with one of Godzilla's dorsal plates. This is confirmed to be in the movie. One of Godzilla's toys sports red mechanized armor, and is dubbed "Mega Godzilla." This is not yet confirmed for the movie. * Confirmed returning castmembers are Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler, and Zhang Ziyi, all of which are reprising their roles from King of the Monsters. * New cast includes Alexander Skarsgard (The Legend of Tarzan), Rebecca Hall (Iron Man 3), Brian Tyree Henry (If Beale Street Could Talk), Eiza Gonzalez (Baby Driver), Jessica Henwick (Love and Monsters), and Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2). * Budget is said to be $155 Million, the lowest of the MonsterVerse. * Test screening results were highly positive. Those who attended stated that the film runs a lean hour and 40 minute runtime, give or take, which would make it the shortest of the MonsterVerse. Anyway, bring it on! I am so ready.

Just saw it posted on FB and all I can say is... holy crap!
That's a very effective trailer. Is that the first time some monster has socked Godzilla in the jaw? I know he's been hit, pushed, blasted, but a Rocky style right cross to the face... that's different, isn't it?
I still call Godzilla the king, but that trailer makes a convincing case for the big ape, he's fast, agile, and smart.
only thing I disliked was the music. (I want music for the Gods, not freakin rap)
Some time, some day, some how, I want to see this in IMAX.

Details this trailer confirms: * Kong is taken from Skull Island by force, ala traditional King Kong lore. He has also befriended a little girl, who we know little about other than Rebecca Hall's character takes care of her. Maybe she's a part of Monarch's stationed crew on Skull Island? Speculation. * Godzilla is being driven by something and is out of control. This isn't the first time Godzilla has been taken over by an outside force, see: Godzilla vs. Monster Zero, Destroy All Monsters, and Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla. My speculation theorizes it might have something to do with the Orca from the previous film. Millie Bobby Brown, Jullian Dennison, and Brian Tyree Henry are on a mission to figure out what's wrong with the big guy. * Nozuki is indeed a native of Skull Island. Kong is going to have an epic fight with more than one. * The trailer seemingly confirms that Kong's battle ax is made of Godzilla's dorsal plate. Note how it absorbs Godzilla's heat beam and glows. There is a possibility that it might not come from Godzilla himself but rather the remains of another of Godzilla's species. The trailer also confirms that Kong's species and Godzilla's species are natural enemies. Possibly to do with alpha dominance. * While it's easy to miss, closer inspection confirms the film's third act twist. Can you spot it? * I'm going to be bold and declare a winner of the fight between Godzilla and Kong based on what this trailer revealed. If one wants to know what I think, click here ---> I believe Kong will win. There are several things that are pushing me in that direction, with the first being that Kong is being portrayed as the more sympathetic of the two monsters while Godzilla is on a rampage. Traditionally this usually decides who the audience is supposed to root for in a VS movie like Freddy vs. Jason, Alien vs. Predator, and even the original King Kong vs. Godzilla. This isn't always the case, as movies like Frankenstein Meet the Wolf Man sympathizes the Wolf Man but ends in a stalemate, Batman v Superman sympathizes Superman but ends with Batman on top, and Sadako vs. Kayako features neither being as sympathetic. I'm inclined for something more traditional here, as Kong is an underdog champ, like Rocky. It seems like a good beat down from Kong could snap Godzilla out of whatever funk he's in too. While this movie will end with the two as heroes (see above), Kong being the victor just seems like it's the right move.
Unless there is a moment of "MARTHAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaa!" in this movie (Mothra?).

I was thinking Godzilla was raging due to something Monarch was doing, or something to do with Ghidora's head, rather than being controlled by an outside force... though it could be an outside force.
Filmmakers have said that there will be a clear winner in the fight. For me, it's got to be Godzilla, but I can see the argument for Kong.

Sometime last year, We Got This Covered was reporting that Legendary and HBO Max were in talks to develop a TV series set in the MonsterVerse. Since it was WGTC reporting it, everyone ignored it because it was likely pulled out of their ass. Turns out there was a half truth to it AND they pulled it out of their ass! www.comingsoon.net/movies/news/1161690-netflix-legendary-developing-tomb-raider-skull-island-anime-seriesNetflix, not HBO Max, has greenlit an anime series from Legendary taking place on Skull Island, following a group of castaways surviving on the island. Netflix and Legendary have a pre-existing relationship, as they distribute Legendary's reboot of Lost in Space and will also distribute Legendary's anime based on the video game Tomb Raider, which was also announced today. (Incidentally, I had initially misread this article as a Tomb Raider ON Skull Island series and was nerding out before I realized they were two separate projects) This is not the first Kong animated series. In the 1960's there was The King Kong Show children's series by Rankin Bass, which spun off the live action theatrical film King Kong Escapes. Following the success of Godzilla: The Series, the year 2000 saw Kong: The Animated Series, which spun off two direct to video films, Kong: King of Atlantis and Kong: Return to the Jungle. Netflix also distributed the 2016 animated series Kong: King of the Apes. There is also a direct to video animated musical from Warner Brothers titled The Mighty Kong in 1998, which was just a child friendly retelling of the original King Kong film. Netflix also distributes anime based on Godzilla and Ultraman, with Godzilla: Singularity Point debuting later this year.

Outside my appreciation for Gamera and his gallery thanks to MST, I don't have any real affinity for Godzilla or the other monster features. I certainly don't dislike or try to detract from them, just not my thing. I'll admit this does look like a fun time in the theater, or home theater, though. I have no dog in this fight, but that said, I'm rooting for Kong With them saying there is a definite winner in this battle, it feels pretty obvious Godzilla is going to win this. I'm pretty sure he has more fans and drives more fans to the box office.

Hot off the heels of the Godzilla vs. Kong trailer, we get a thirty second tease of Shin Ultraman, from the directors of Shin Godzilla.
Filmmaking style looks very close to Shin Godzilla, though the CGI looks like the worst stuff from that film so far. Perhaps there will be better shots in the final film.
But what's going to make the film is the script. What made Shin Godzilla good was it was a successful modern reinterpretation of the Godzilla character that made a solid commentary on politics. If Shin Ultraman has a take that's feels just as fresh, it could be wonderful.
And I hope that happens and they get offers to make Shin Gamera, Shin Rodan, Shin Mothra, Shin Kamen Rider, ect.

I'm going to keep it brief because it's 4 AM and I have a theatrical screening of it in eleven hours (and an additional screening tomorrow with friends). Sleep must happen somewhere in between.
Here is what occurs to me about this movie, most Godzilla fans my age are fans because we grew up with the Godzilla films of the 1960's. Out of all the American Godzilla movies, Godzilla vs. Kong is the closest we've seen to a recreation of that 60's Godzilla flick feel. There is a mostly absurd storyline that exists mostly to get stoic characters to gawk at the monsters, said stoic characters run into adversaries with a lot of power and their own agenda which sets off a chain reaction that somehow pits Godzilla up against another monster. This is also mostly an excuse to give a film an unapologetic sci-fi aesthetic that, realistic looking or not (mostly not, and one can argue that Godzilla vs. Kong looks just as fake), is never tiring to look at, like most Japanese effects movies. Also featuring some wildly exaggerated comic relief and a little kid who befriends a monster (this was more common in Gamera movies, but Godzilla had a couple as well). Godzilla vs. Kong is probably the most "Japanese" of Godzilla's tenure in America.
Funnily enough, a lot of this has to do with just how many swings King of the Monsters took. The 2014 Godzilla was a bit timid, showing people going about life then suddenly HOLY poopie GIANT LIZARD. King of the Monsters really tried to push a mythology for the Titans, a lot based on ideas from previous Godzilla films. But one of its biggest faults is that it probably pushed too much in one go, and the film, while fun to watch, collapses under its convolutedness. Godzilla vs. Kong runs with several ideas the previous film presented, but keeps them simple. Even when it goes completely silly with them, it at least has the smarts to know if it takes itself seriously then the dimwittedness will drain the audience. Instead it maintains a spirited sense of the absurd, and it feels very much like it's a Godzilla movie that's targeting the people who enjoy the spirit of the absurd presented in a Fast & Furious movie.
I have more thoughts on this movie, but I'm going to collect them and watch it a few more times to sit with how I feel about this movie. After first watch (on my phone) I really enjoyed it. I'd probably say it's the best of all the American Godzilla films, though out of the MonsterVerse I'd probably still side preference to Skull Island. I'll probably have a much longer review up by this weekend, but we'll see how I feel after the big screen experience.
