At the risk of offending an actual fan, I have to say I can't stand her. But that's kind of messed up. I mean, why beat up Avril Lavigne? What the hell does that prove? It's not like someone walked up to Sid Vicious and smacked him around.

from what little i've heard i can't say i'm terribly taken with her music, but on the other hand, as someone who cares a great deal about guitar-oriented hard rock, i haven't like much of anything in that genre since, oh, 1985 or thereabouts.

I don't know who Avril Lavigne is, but the topic of a music star in a brawl brought this to mind ...

Now, where's the person who beat her up... apparently there were five of them, so you might be better off poisoning them or tampering with their brakes rather than going with the frontal assault, hulk-style approach. tell you the truth, this story kinda makes me mad too. i'm pretty old school when it comes to beating up women, and how real men don't do it.

I came from the same School so I'm with you on that. you know, spurred by this disastrous news and some of the other avril lavigne stuff i've glanced at on this board i checked a couple tunes out and i kinda like it. she's got a strong voice, good concepts, strong arrangements. it seems to die in production. i sorta wish they'd turn off the auto-tune -- i'm not sure why you'd use that with someone who can actually sing, esp. for a studio recording -- and just set her up with a trio in a nice room and record it organically instead of remixing and EQ-balancing all the life out of it. but the songs seem to be strong and she's not playing, she expresses serious emotion, i appreciate that.

That's "LA" Reid for ya. She was actually signed as a folk/country act based on this demo...
But she found rock and roll in the meantime and recorded this instead (with 2 other numbers)
Arista wasn't amused but told her that if she wanted to do rock that she would have to write and work with their producers (The Matrix). They created some good numbers and some big hits. But yeah, I wish they'd cut back on some of the over production.
(though I can't complain too much, I'm a Beatles and Alice Cooper fan, both into big, slick productions. And personally when I'm in the studio I love to experiment and use whatever tricks I can find (autotune to multiple FX boxes to whatever) and layer on track after track. Just to play around and see what it sounds like)

that's nice stuff. the "tell me why" tune has overtones of joni mitchell's "car on a hill" to me. she sounds a bit joni at times, for instance, listen to the "why-yy?" at 3:08; that's not the only time, she does a couple. but also the general heartbreak sweet-love-gone-sour feel of it all. you know if she's a joni fan at all?

She was part of the Shania Twain generation as a kid. I'm not sure what she thought of Mitchell, though reviewers have noted that there are hints of Carole King and Joni Mitchell in certain tunes.
