It seems that Science-Fantasy novelist Anne McCaffrey has passed away at the age of 85.

Sadness. Maybe it's time I finally revisit Pern after all these years...

The first fantasy story I ever read that sucked me in was "The Smallest Dragonrider". She was my first "favorite author"-the one who I devoured every thing I could find of and actually kept track of new release dates so I could get the rest. I remember hauling home a backpack full of Anne's books and it actually ripping and not feeling an ounce of shame carrying the massive stack the rest of the way home. I remember exchanging a laundry basket full of her books with more than one friend in attempts to get them hooked as much as I was.
Fair skies, Dragon Lady.

I'll admit I didn't read a lot of her stuff past the first couple of series. But the first trilogy is seared into my psyche as part of what fantasy *IS*.

I think you'd like quite a bit of it.
I don't think enough people realize how good she was at world-building. Pern was only the best known of the lot-she had a half dozen or more really healthy series she could revolve through. Some of the stand-alones were as good or better.
