Glad you found that. Yeah, I had some of the same sense of discontinuity you describe. Still, especially if it's meant to be a trilogy I found it decent as a setup, though if it doesn't expand on some areas I think I'd be very disappointed. While I did like the line about "uniting the Mongols if I have to kill half of them to do it," so far it hasn't really acknowledged his ruthlessness. I'd like to see a bit more of the "I'm inspired by events to remember the exits in back of me" side.
On your specific nit of his weapons proficiency, that didn't bother me too much. Boys in warrior societies tend to be learning that kind of stuff from the moment they stand up. But it does remind me of my own nit that I'd have liked to see lances and especially bows emphasized more. Those bizarre scythe horsemen in the climactic battle had me doing a Tom Servo "the hell?"
I'm sure I'll have more nits once I check the imdb listing.
Edit: Found a couple more Lloyd rants. Someday I'd like to watch a Steve Reeves Hercules with him. /(@o@)\
Edit 2: I wish I'd recollected this one and put it before that lovely self-parodistic one above, but I think he puts his finger on the issue here:
