It's hard to compare best deals. It depends on how often yiu,use it based on the price it offers. I'd reccomend trying a buch of free trials and see which ones charm you with their lineup.
I know Hulu Plus offers a lot of Criterian titles. That might be a place to start.

What Torgo said. I'm trying a free membership at Netflix, which lasts a month and a one at Hulu plus, which is a week. Hulu's got a couple hundred Criterion's, which is a big plus for me.
Both will want credit cards or paypal info first, but each are easy as pie to cancel. So even though you said you didn't want Netflix, since it's not difficult to cancel, it doesn't hurt to sample both and see which one you prefer. They both cost around $8 a month.
I had a Netflix account previously, but I just signed up with a different email and they took it. Both are coming up on the end of my free trials and I plan to drop Netflix and keep Hulu for another month or so, and just pour through their Criterion collection.
Amazon has their prime thingy, I sampled that but wasn't impressed with their selection. Plus you have to pay for the whole year. So that one I dropped when it came due.
