Hey, welcome back! Sit a spell, have a drink, but if it's offered by sia, just say no.

Solgroupie left due to personal reasons.
Captain Hygiene has a job and is tracking the weather as we speak.

Cap H is Helen Hunt from Twister? That actually makes sense.

In_Stereo: he once sent me a very polite message a year or so ago asking if he could come back. I said no. Well, I'm certainly not going to start a recall campaign against you for that call, but if he could somehow be restricted to his own, hermetically sealed thread . . .

Actually I think he's in my crawlspace.

That crawlspace must be getting to look like a Whitmann's sampler by now.

Dr. Z.: Guess he left us at some point while I was away (like I can talk). I'll always have a soft spot for the guy who got my Firesign Theatre references when I was new. Come back and take revenge on this friend, sir. he posted a farewell in his blog thread.

he posted a farewell in his blog thread. Thanks, I'll go check it out. Back in my day Mrs Castleton Snob was all over the games. No more. I know what it's like to need a break from here but total deletion has always puzzled me. First point seconded. As for the second, I can only speak for myself, but I suppose I'm qualified at this point. When I joined the board, it was my native-speaking English community. This probably explains my overly elaborate style here. Many people who live abroad find their native speech simplifies, and I wanted to remain the sort of person who can use words like "inarticulate." But that sort of intensified the dilemma of online communities, simultaneously intimate and anonymous. Even on my return to the States, with no particular relatives, friends moved away either physically or metaphorically and chronically under-employed, that didn't fundamentally change. This led to periods when my hung-over morning ritual went straight from checking e-mail to reviewing my last posts on the board to see how many were simply too inappropriate to leave. Seemed that pretty soon my post-count would be running backwards. Heh heh . . . later I tried to sneak back in, only to find that SOL Stowaway (another guy I miss seeing these days) was doing a countdown to member number 3000, and did a big production post on him/me. That weird reinduction and the blatherous temptations of the new blog area led fairly quickly to another sock-puppet suicide. So far, so good in my third iteration, provided you're into reviews of weird Japanese films and obscure references in Games.

We got so many complaints about him from people that it would be too much potential trouble. I got PMs not just from people he'd rag on, but also from people who should have been his ideological allies. I even got a couple of complaints from lurkers who never post. Just too many to risk upsetting people, even if he has grown up now.

Believe me, that doesn't surprise me a bit. And yes, it was less his politics, however knee-jerk, but his abrasiveness.

I believe while it was a group decision, I recall that I was the one who actually put the hammer down on IS. I remember for two reasons:
1. It was my first ban. 2. Because it was a part of a group that included Wild Rebel (and some other member that I can't recal at the moment)
Normally I don't like the idea of banning people, but the sensation of banning Wild Rebel was like having really, really good sex. Poor Stereo got caught in the crossfire.

Well, I don't want to engage in Schadenfreude, but I find it appropriate that they went out together.
Please don't interpret what I'm saying here as a "Free In_Stereo" movement. In a board-wide referendum I'd probably vote to give him another chance but I'd place my money against without a single qualm.

This is sounding similar to a character that Sia had discussed with me. She reminded me that it was board's objective to moderate tone, not opinion, and she mentioned that the user was civil in other sections of the board. I did have my complaints, however, that the admins should have acted a little sooner simply on the way that he carried his profile. When I have to look at an avatar that features Barack Obama's head superimposed on Adolf Hitler's body, it's an issue that extends beyond Observer's Brain.
It did remind me that I myself need to moderate my own tone. I remember when one thread was posted, my immediate reaction was a smart alec comment which seemed to snowball and warranted a warning from Mr. Atari. I later went back and cleared up that my point was that the article was written from one point of view and was clearly engineered for generating knee-jerk reactions, which Mr. A concurred with.
In my defense, given how incompetently the article was written, a smart alec comment was somewhat warranted.

"It's as if In_Stereo--by his banning--sowed a seed in us all, that we might share by its growth."
Sorry, my obligatory Oshima Nagisa paraphrase of the week. Carry on.

I_S was given more chances than anybody in the history of message boards... his banishment was his own doing. 2. Because it was a part of a group that included Wild Rebel (and some other member that I can't recal at the moment) The other person was TarlCabot. If I remember correctly he wasn't as bad as those two but when that massive fight went down he stupidly involved himself and got taken out in the crossfire. Fun times.
