...From my website requests over the years, I'd say females gravitate a bit to Mike... I have no concrete preference of one over the other, though I do rather like Nelson's more sarcastic, edgy style. I suspect the ladies might also go for Nelson owing to his Midwestern guy-next-door looks. Hodgson is kind of skinny and dorky-looking, Nelson's boyishly handsome.

Here's the advice I've doled out to all you young whippersnappers over the years: DON'T START WITH MANOS.
I know, it's wonderful, the gold standard, the MST episode. But it's the deep end. The deep end with tidepools and sharp rocks and a dark, creepy bottom. It's simply too much for the uninitated, the newbie, the blinking fawnlike creature that is your intended woo-ee... Quite agree. Wait until you're sure Dream Girl is digging it before you pour on the Deep Hurting. Another earlier poster also had a good suggestion about showing your potential S.O. some old KTMA episodes once you're sure she really, really digs MST. Kinda reminds me of when I first got into the Grateful Dead, back in college, in the 70s. I first saw them in '78, and the first two albums I bought were Aoxomoxa and American Beauty, two albums they'd made after their style had evolved into what everyone recognizes as the "Dead style". After I'd been into them for a few years, I went back and checked out the real early stuff. I wasn't too crazy about the first two albums: their '67 debut LP was real speedy and jangly, like a lot of mid '60s "garage" psych, and their second album was just too fragmented, incoherent and weirded-out to deal with. I think if the first MST3K episode I'd seen had been from Season 0, I might not have liked them as much. As it was, I first got into them early in Season 3, when they'd finally gotten into a good groove. it wasn't until just recently, when the KTMA shows became available via the torrents and YouTube, that I finally got to see some of their original seminal work, and I've got to say that much of it was like the first two Grateful Dead albums -- little bits of it were really cool, but most of it was really tough going.

For shorts, there would be two obvious ones: The Chicken of Tomorrow or Design for Dreaming. Both I would consider among the best of them all. Runners up would be Cheating or The Truck Farmer.
Other suggestions for shorts?
PS NO, I will not make her watch Mr. B Natural right out of the chute. I'm mean and cruel, but that's inhuman. Oh, man, yeah... I'm an old fan from way back, and it took me forever to finally get into Mr. B. Natural. As far as shorts suggestions... well, you've already picked a couple of my all-timers -- Chicken Of Tomorrow and Design For Dreaming -- but I'd also like to throw in Out Of This World, Century 21 Calling, Circus On Ice and the General Hospital series. General Hospital is one of my "go-to's" when I can't make up my mind what I want to watch, and after dozens of viewings, it still never fails to cause my wife to shout up to the studio, "MIKE! What the HELL are you laughing at up there??!"

Yeah, KTMA, for me, even though it's a bit rough, inspires me, because my resources, even 20 years in the future is about the same and it tells me if I try hard enough I can be successful just standing in front of a camera and talking about stuff I like. And I like the early excuses for why Trace and Joel weren't there, those were funny too.

Want to hook a female MSTie? Think "chick flick."
Teenagers From Outer Space stars that Tiger Beat-ish Harry Connick Jr. wanna-be in a tragic interplanetary romance. Sounds like "chick" fodder if ya ask me. ;D
Space Mutiny. Reb Brown as eye candy for the girls. Dude wasn't much of an actor, but, hey, give him credit where it's due, he was buff. (By that token, the Hercules movies might be of similiar interest. Also Future War with that Van Dammish guy in the lead.)
But what if your gal's not into the hunky types and prefers them brainy and sensitive?
Overdrawn at the Memory Bank just might cut the mustard. Raul Julia exudes charm and charisma to spare, there's all the Casablanca references, and besides, it's one of the funniest episodes of the Mike era.
The Giant Gila Monster and The Beatniks both feature Don Sullivan, a smooth and likeable B (okay, C) movie actor. Gila Monster is a better showcase for Sullivan. He even sings and plays the guitar!

really, though, we did have this discussion not too long ago and the consensus (borne out by tests in the field) is, start with a short. that way if it's just not her thing, her suffering will be short-lived. we misties have trouble admitting this, but sometimes people who aren't dullards still don't like the show. it's a bit of a rarefied taste. my last two ladies have loved French New Wave but try as i might, i just can't get into it, even though i don't think i'm an idiot. i wouldn't want to have to sit through a whole French New Wave movie on a first date, especially a weird obscure one. "breathless," sure...
i think i'd suggest "Young Man's Fancy," which is just laden with inappropriate female desire. only thing is, it might make your lady so randy it'll make YOU a little uncomfortable. she'll be squishy, and she'll need to move on it. you better be ready too.

Oh, man, yeah... he sings whatever he sings whenever he sings. Still, gotta go with The Beatniks, for that scintillating performance by savage young Peter Breck.

No argument on The Beatniks.

Deathstalker is a great intro in my opinion. The acting is terrible and fun to make fun of, while the movie itself doesnt have that bad of a production value. (considering the source)

With a lady, its best to be careful. Want to hook a female MSTie? Think "chick flick." before i say anything, i want to stress i'm not trying to turn this into a big sexist free-for-all - but why would an introduction to mst3k matter if it is for a male or female? there are plenty of chicks who are into the godzilla experiments as guys. plenty of guys who like the more sensitive films, like girl in lover's lane or the young man's fancy short. i don't base which mst i watch by how hunky the lead might be or what kind of 'chick flick' vibe it has. funny is funny. she'll either get it or she won't. don't bog yourself down on trying to make this into a science experiment.

Well,Im a chick and even though I love Mike, I have a slight preference for Joel.I just think its cute how he is more paternalistic towards the bots. And I find both men cute in their own way.
As far as what a female viewer might prefer, it depends on what type of movie she usually goes for. If she isnt into sci-fi, show her something more along the lines of "The Beatniks","Teenagers from outer space" "Girl in Lovers Lane" etc, that have to do with the more social aspects than giant monsters and outer space. If she likes horror flicks, show her horror flicks, and if she does like sci-fi, show her a sci fi flick. It all depends what her prefered genre is.

It's important to be careful with this girl, because he likes this girl. its nice when you and the girl you like both like something and can spend time liking it together. or so i like to think I wasn't suggesting that girls dont like it as much, have a harder time getting into it, or anything else like that

No no no.
What you do is put on "The Home Economics Story" and when she starts laughing and looks over to you, have a stone-straight face on and say "Do I look like I'm laughing? Get up and sew me something delicious!"
