I should have posted this earlier this week, but I didn't notice there wasn't a thread until just now. George McGovern was a Democratic U.S. Senator from South Dakota who lost to the presidential election to Nixon in a landslide in 1972. He didn't even carry his home state in the election, but his legacy has lived on in the modern Democratic party.
He was respected and liked here in South Dakota, but not supported. Even his detractors and opponents liked him - everyone thought he was a nice guy despite not agreeing with his policies.
