anyone in her path? i have family in maryland/delaware, so i have been worried about them. my dad lives right on the water, but they aren't planning on evacuating as of yet. i live in tennessee and even we're getting effects from the edges of the storm - it's rainy, windy and actually snowing.

Here in Brooklyn the rain is beginning to pound and the wind is pretty fierce. I actually went outside in the foolish hope of finding a newspaper (no luck), and a couple of gusts almost knocked me sideways. I know my basement is going to flood, so I've scratched that one off my worry list. I will deal with that when the storm is over. (I'm sure I can get some help from my neighbor if it's really bad.) I am very nervous about losing power, and I've been obsessively checking Con Edison's outage map to see what's been going on. So far, so good. I'm home from work today because the subways have been shut down (although in all honesty, I wasn't going in today no matter what). I guess I'll be home tomorrow too. If I wasn't so worried about the situation I'd actually enjoy the time off. Sandy, I wish you had stayed the hell away.

Can you get a portable generator or something, so that if your power does go out, your sump pump in the basement can still work.

They were all sold out by the time I got to the store. Once this storm passes and the stores all restock, maybe I'll get one and stash it for the future.

i just got an email from my dad - he said he and my mom left. they got a hotel room about 30 miles inland, which gives me much relief. this is the first time they've ever left for a storm. checked in with my sister and her husband said they were staying put. their biggest threat is probably flooding - they're calling for something like 11 inches of rain and 90 mph winds. good luck to you, hellcat. i hope sky is out of harm's way.

Best of luck to your family too, and to anyone who has the misfortune to be stuck with Sandy.

I talked with Sky on Sunday...he said he was okay. My in-laws are out east and my next door neighbor's son lives in Delaware. I hope they're all okay. Glad to hear your family evacuated...this storm really looks like one of those superstorms they're talking about.

i can't believe it, but it's snowing. in tennessee. in october. okay, it's basically november by now, but still. we rarely ever get snow this early in the year. they're calling for 1-3 inches, but i doubt we'll get more than a dusting. i live about 10 minutes from the higher elevations and they always get much more than us, dagnabit.
last i heard from my b-i-l, the rain was coming down pretty hard and the wind was fierce, but they still had power. i'm amazed their phones were still working. the flooding is going to be pretty bad. new york looks pretty soggy - stay dry, hellcat!

I've had the outer effects of it since Saturday night. Never did lose power, but this is getting to be a pain in the tuckus. It looks like it may finally be done here some time tomorrow.

Well, they've closed parts of Lakeshore Drive in Chicago, and we're having 50mph wind gusts but it looks like that's all we will get; no snow.
Saw a funny post on Facebook which said:
Name the hurricane A-Rod, then it won't hit anything.

This is one of those things that the forecasters were pushing here when Isaac hit. There's no such thing as "..just a catagory one." as we saw. Isaac was "only" a one, and it still flooded Plaquemines parish as bad as Katrina flooded New Orleans. But this one, all the stars seemed to align to make this a super storm, I wouldn't want to be a part of that. I just hope everyone stays safe, avoid downed power lines, don't drive down flooded streets. And after the storm, when the stores do open, please be patient with the employees, cashiers, etc. Remember, they are in the same position you are, only they had to report back to work!

Saw a funny post on Facebook which said: Name the hurricane A-Rod, then it won't hit anything. LOL! That's a good one. My power is still on. According to the Con Ed outage map, there are scattered outages in my neighborhood, but the outages have not increased since I checked it last night (at least in my area). I haven't checked the basement for flooding yet (I'm working up the nerve to go down there), but when I look out in my backyard I don't see any puddles or pools. I see that as a good sign. We didn't have as much rain with this one as we did with Irene last year. No big branches came down in my yard. I do believe that the worst is over. The question that bothers me now is: When am I going to be able to return to work? The subways are still shut down and lower Manhattan (where I work) is a mess and has no power. I was eager for some time off, but not under these circumstances.

glad to hear the damage has been minimal. haven't talked to my people yet, but from what i've seen on the news, it looks like it could have been much worse. while i was watching this morning, i heard a report of a roof collapsing in brooklyn - i thought, oh crap, hellcat! glad it wasn't you!

Seemingly minimal damage in my area just outside of Boston. Work was closed yesterday and I took today off to help with some cleanup. Not sure how bad it actually is there.
